The entire focus of this team is on Ball and Player movement. The only time you see strict ISO is when all else fails. It really is going to be a major sea change for Melo and this team and we should see different results based on this system and style of coaching. Whereas Woody was the perfect storm of a coach that favors ISO and a star player who favors ISO, this new regime are full of the Anti-ISO mentality. Phil, Fish and Staff come from a background of moving the ball. It's the best we can hope for and if Melo can't improve in this environment he never will.

great article. it was factual with out an agenda for or against Melo, we don't know whose to play for Melo's non ball moving ways of last season. Melo can clear that up by being extremely unselfish this year proving he was simply doing as he was told last year, running a renovated version of Woodson's iso-joe offense.

At some point Melo sat down with Phil and had to make a choice about his game. Move the ball or don't.
Both Kobe and Jordan were ball hogs and had to learn. So the hope is Melo made a decision to stay and be a part of the future or go to Chicago and be on a more talented team.

Not to say we need to "thank him" but lets just say his skill set is as an elite scorer and his team's failure to advance futher can be of many factors but one is that inability for any team or group of players to put the chemistry together. Karl, MDA, Woodson and his own inability to go beyond what makes him that elite scorer is all to blame at some level or another.

This is his last big contract and obvious the money is there but also phil convinced him to accept the challange.

Tune in and find out. Its not gonna happen over night.

Kobe remained a ball hog and a chucker under Phil. Didn't matter because of his supporting cast. Melo can't afford to remain a chucker and I am sure that Phil and Melo DID discuss this.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Kobe is also a great defender and can actually make plays for others. Its going to be tough for Melo to replicate Jordan & Kobe in every aspect of the game. I don't think he can. Thats just reality

He used to be a great defender, but he's slipping now due to age. I always find Kobes career fascinating, because he has had fans flip-flopping over him all his career- he used to go from "ball hog" selfish chucker (remember that playoff series where he made a point of not shooting the ball in an elimination game?) to champion and back again and back again, when really he's played pretty much the same way his whole career. At the end of the day he's both- ******* bulldog AND champion! Everyone fawns over him now, but he was despised a few years ago. Melo isn't in his league though when it comes to competitiveness and drive.

Kobe Tested Phil's patience. It was a struggle despite the success and he has written about it.

Logic Dictates Melo's buy in. Maybe Maturity and maybe realizing that winning with Chicago won't yield the satisfaction as its Rose and noah's team. Anything less than a chip would look bad on him.
But winning with the knicks given their history would paint him in a positive light, even if they don't win a chip. They have to contend. While a chip would cement a legacy, making them relevant with a few ECF's or a finals appearence would not be too bad either!

He at least would be a "winner" in NY!

It's better for Melo to have his own team and win than to have joined forces with the Bulls IMO. I think Phil will be able to put a winning team together and the team will be competitive even this year so it's not a very long wait IMO to have the benefit of winning in NY as THE STAR of the team rather than joining DRose and Noah who are more established in Chicago.

I fully expect to see more Olympic Melo than we've seen before in the regular season. It's easier for Melo to play that way and succeed here with this coaching staff and roster. The only reason it didn't happen with MDA is mainly because of the lack of a PG on a consistent basis. That would've made it easier for the team as a whole to function well at the same time as Melo also playing well. MDA would not have had to try and force Melo to be more of a passer if he had a legit PG rather than starting the year with TD and then the whole Linsanity thing making Melo jealous. It was just screwed up from the start. Then with Kidd we got to see for a while what it could be like with a good floor leader and ball mover out there with Melo. It disappeared when Kidd faded at the end of the year and Woody caught a brain cramp. Then Kidd left but that was a glimpse into what it could be. Now we have a better Prez, coach, system and PG which should make it much easier for Melo to buy in and play the way he's being asked.

Since Melo has been here this is the most together and organized that this roster and front office has been. In every other season we had issues coming into the season with a lockout thrown in the mix. This is the most stable that things have been and the highest quality Leadership we've had since Melo got here. That's very important. No Dolan drama!!! No Lame Duck Coach or GM!!! Many of the players have to perform due to contract considerations.

Good Points but i dont always make excuses for melo. He has a lot fo work to do as well. I mean i still believe he could have won in Denver if he boguht into George Karl who was a good coach. I still think melo needs to play with somone who is good at every phase of the game.
