Saint Peter's University to host celebrity all-star basketball game this Saturday

A rap star, a former NFL Pro Bowler and the greatest female basketball player in Hudson County history will be among the celebrities lending a hand to the Jersey City Recreation Department this weekend.

Jersey City Recreation will host its “Celebrity Basketball Showdown” at Saint Peter’s University's Yanitelli Center to benefit rec programs in Jersey City on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Some of the bigger names participating in the event include rapper Ja Rule, ESPN NBA analyst Chris Broussard, former New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott, former NBA all-star Vin Baker, as well as former WNBA all-star and Bayonne native Adrienne Goodson — widely considered to be Hudson County’s best female basketball player.

“We’re trying to bring basketball back to Jersey City,” said Andrew Kemp, a management assistant for Jersey Recreation. “This event is something for our community to do together; it brings excitement to town and it gives the kids an opportunity to meet some celebrities.”

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop will also hit the hardwood on Saturday, along with various basketball tricksters including the Lob Squad, the self-proclaimed “World’s Best Dunker” Guy “Frequent Flyer” Dupuy, and self-titled “World’s Shortest Dunker,” Porter “Gravity” Maberry.

Former New York Knick Charles Smith, who is also participating in the event, is said to be a driving force behind the recruitment of the different celebrities.
Kemp hinted that Jersey City Recreation might try to capitalize on the NBA All-Star Game being played at Madison Square Garden this February and hold an even larger event next year.

Proceeds from Saturday’s event will benefit after-school and senior recreation programs in Jersey City.

The doors open at 6 p.m. with tipoff set for 7 p.m.

Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for students with ID, and $5 for children 12 years old and under. For more information or advance tickets, call (201) 547-5003.

Hope Vin Baker isn't there when you stumble in.
