Just pointing out that there is a lot of chance involved here. A Jeter playing with the Padres or Brewers is simply not the same player. You don't build an offense around Jeter, he is very much dependent on having a great lineup around him. His rbi stats as a leadoff or 2nd hitter were also aided by the lack of a pitcher in the lineup and a great hitter behind him. Not many hitters you would want more than Jeter with a guy on 3rd that you needed knocked in, or a leadoff situation where you needed a walk or hit to start an inning, but when you look at the lineups and pitching the Yankees had, you can see why he had so many opportunities to shine. I am also saying that players like Gwynn and Yount would be seen the same way if they had been in a similar situation. Other than that, I'm also saying that this kind of player never get the recognition they truly deserve unless they are on Championship teams, and even then, the non-flamboyant players don't get the accolades they should get. This is true in many team sports. I also think that even with all the respect Jeter gets from people who understand the sport, his style of play and demeanor does not seem to rub off in an era where "in your face," making a face into the camera, the spectacular play, or end zone dance, gets the publicity. In basketball they highlight the dunk, not the great pass that led to it. In baseball they highlight the 500 ft homer of a .230 hitter who will end up with 160 strikeouts in a year, not the guy who gives himself up to move a runner to 3rd base.
EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?
