Yes, defense.

Defense is another matter. Andrea Bargnani, Stoudemire and Calderon are established defensive laggards. As for Hardaway, he played defense like a fawn trying to cross the New York State Thruway, an exercise in cluelessness. - Michael Powell, NYTimes

He is correct.

Anytime Stoudemire is on the floor, the Knicks are especially vulnerable in the frontcourt.

That must change.

melo is a ****ty defender why leave him off the list?
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

It's obvious this team is full of defensive liabilities, I'm just hoping Fish and Co. can get these guys to help each other, play smart, and hustle. It starts with some good conditioning which I think Phil already alluded to and then Fish needs to implement a defensive system where players are on the same page and understand where to be relative to what the offense is doing. Positioning is often overlooked and is very important.

OKC had a great defensive mentality and system regardless of their talent. Yeah it looks better when Ibaka is defending the paint but Tyson showed a few years ago you don't need to be a great shot blocker to have a huge defensive impact. Some decent footwork, solid fundamentals and an understanding of where help needs to come from can go a long way. Plus with the post game being so underused today I think worrying about that aspect isn't a major factor. Defend the pick and roll, and when the d gets broken down, send weak side help and rotate back. Pretty simple concepts, many players just don't apply themselves.

It's a concern. We're starting one of the worse PG defenders in the league and we have defensive stalwarts Barge and STAT. I'm hopeful the staff will come up with defensive schemes that will hide our weaknesses. We'll also have to find ways to hide Calderon each game.

The production you got out of Amare 12-5 56% in 22 minutes last year is very solid. Well be fine with Amare for the next year

The number of points that he gave/gives up on defense is the problem. I believe that the knicks did far worse when he was on the court.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

This is why Shumpert is still on the roster. I think JR will also chase the speedy point guards too. Hopefully, Phil will have ideas for implementing a defensive posture going forward. I can't see him letting Clyde drone on about the defense that they played when he was on the team and have no solutions. Phil realizes the importance of "D".

Judging off last season, Shump was pretty mediocre. He had some good moments but also had some awful games too.

First off Melo is no longer considered a bad defender. He's Proven that over the last 2 seasons. Dude is guarding all 3 front court positions and banging with guys bigger than him.

Amare scoring well has nothing to do with defense. He can't rebound either.

Bargnani is a very good man on man defender. He's a horrible team defender.

Toure hardly played last year to even say he was a factor in defense.

Shump is definitely a mediocre defender. Bargnani had stopped more people than he has. Ask Dwight Howard.

I just want to say some of you guys are media clones just repeating what's been said in the past. You guys suck

Melo isn't terrible, that's for sure. But the guy isn't anything special and doesn't appear to be a leader either. I think Shump can bounce back and be a very good defender with some good coaching and a boost of confidence. But last year he wasn't good. Bargnani can defend in the post and he has fairly quick feet for a 7 footer but overall the guy is lost when it comes to help defense, which really is the most important defensive quality in a big man today. So in my eyes Bargs is still a terrible defender until he learns where to be, when to be there, and just protect the damn rim.

I hope part of our defensive struggles from last year are cured by having a system that doesn't involve switching on every play. I don't know if the coaching staff has felt the talent wasn't there and switching was the best answer, but I would have loved to see us play zone at times.

Woodson was a complete fail as a defensive coach. Probably worse than D'Antoni. Melo is OK as a defender but will tales nights of. Amare was caught looking at his own basket with his back to the action. Defense is the reason why I would be OK with trading THJR. - calling him clueless is putting it mildly. I think Shumpert's defense is overrated.

So to answer your question JR maybe the only one that plays reasonable defense consistently.

Defense will develop under Fish and Jax. Give the young guys a chance to develop. Cole Aldrich could be excellent - he just has to stay healthy.

THJr is a KEEPER. He is perfect for the triangle. Learn about the triangle and then comment.
P.S. In the triangle, going one on one is not the style. It's movement, passing, hi BB IQ, being able to read the defense, and shooting when open or driving to the basket. THJr does all of these very well.

JR ha! Other than Amare no one was singled out more than JR for defensive breakdowns by Woodson and the telecast. No way he plays better defense than Shumpert
