LOS ANGELES – Hours before his final meeting with New York Knicks officials, free agent Carmelo Anthony reached out to obtain free agent Pau Gasol's phone number and discuss with him the possibility of playing together at Madison Square Garden, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Knicks had exuded an increasing confidence they can hold off the free-agent courtships of Chicago and Houston and were further encouraged with Anthony's desire to talk to Gasol about New York, sources said.

The Knicks have a core of leadership, including president Phil Jackson, coach Derek Fisher and point guard Jose Calderon, who have strong history and relationships with Gasol, and those factors would have to play a part in overcoming the fact the Knicks can pay Gasol only the taxpayer's exception starting at $3.28 million annually.

For now, Chicago and Oklahoma City are the most intriguing destinations to Gasol, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Gasol remains a serious target of the Miami Heat, too, sources told Yahoo Sports. Miami president Pat Riley plans to meet with Gasol in Los Angeles this weekend.

Gasol, 33, has been searching for a contract in the $10 million annual range, but hasn't ruled out the possibility of taking a deal in the midlevel exception range of $5.3 million annually, sources said.

Anthony found the Bulls' and Rockets' presentations to be "tremendous," one source close to him said, and has seemed to relish in the recruiting process. The Knicks' final pitch was important, and it is believed that a week of franchises gushing over Anthony left him needing Jackson to leave no doubt that he was completely wanted in New York, sources said. In other words, Jackson risked trouble if he played it too cool.

Anthony had a 2½-hour meeting with the Lakers on Thursday afternoon, but it would take a sudden change of direction for the Lakers to become a serious contender, sources told Yahoo Sports. Kobe Bryant had tried to make it back from a European trip to attend the presentation, but a change in the meeting time ultimately left him unable to do so. Nevertheless, Bryant has a strong relationship with Anthony and has been talking to him regularly about joining the Lakers.

Anthony is expected to take the weekend to make his decision, sources said, but the process is forever fluid.

Dalembert S&T for Gasol could net 7.4mil to offer Gasol

Shump & Prigs S&T could net 8mil to offer Gasol

I can see the lakers taking Shump and prigioni but why would they want Dalembert at $7.4mil?

Actually they probably have zero interest in prigioni with Nash there and the Knicks are not trading him. Prigioni is not going to want to move his family when he can just hang it up. Don't see the Knicks doing that to him

Dalembert has a team option((3.8mil) which the Lakers can unload if they want and not eat any salary or just keep him since he is relatively cheap. We have a 3.6mil trade exception. So we could take back 3.6MIL more then we are dealing out which = 7.4mil.

In short Lakers wouldn't be paying Dalembert 7.4mil. And since Buss and Phil are tight...

I think Dalemberr's contract comes off the cap if he is waived. I don't know that the Knicks can do a sign and trade because they are over the cap. Also I don't see why the lakers would be motivated to do this. P

I believe the Tyson Chandler trade allows us to do S&Ts though and Melo opted out, I am not 100% sure though.

Lakers could lose Gasol for nothing if he goes to the Bulls or OKC. With either of the 2 moves mentioned they at least get a serviceable big man back and possibly there own trade exemption(Don't know how that works) or a young guard.

I'm just going to copy/paste what I just posted in another thread:

Lakers can still S&T Gasol because they're so far under the cap. We won't know if we can S&T for Gasol until the July 10 when the new salary cap numbers are released. Right now, including Melo's cap hold of about $24M, our cap number is $84M. That includes the unguaranteed deals of Dalembert and Odom. If we waived both of them we could shave of something like $3M - $4M. That doesn't include Cleanthony or Thanasis. The latest reports are that the luxury tax will jump to $81M which means the apron will be $85M.

Let's say we resign Melo at $20M/year. Including our unguranteed contracts and the two rookies, at about $1.5M combined, that brings our cap number to $81.5M. If the reports are true and the luxury tax apron is going to be $85M this season then we could S&T for Gasol as long as his starting salary isn't more than $3M more than the salaries we trade for him.

Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

At the very least, we could try and get under the tax apron so we don't have the weakest offer.
