Sounds like a "ProgRock" band, but Phil Coming to NY was a very surprising move after the "Clumsy" roster quote and given our challenges regarding roster, Amare, Bargs and limited draft picks.

Perhaps the obvious is he rebuilds over a few years and installs a culture of decision making that could accumulate into a very nice long term franchise that contends for years. A systematic approach as done in SAS and of late in OKC.

Or the "ZEN STARPHUCH".............a move or series of moves so big our heads explode trying to comprehend it.

What is it? Why would I say such a thing?

Because Phil Jackson didn't just come here for the money or to tutor Dolan. His chess game plan is not for us to see but could the events in front of us not be all it appears regarding Melo?

The Zen Starphuch could be a three year process that involves draft picks, low cost free agents and Euro's, as well as using expirings, or their subsequent cap space.

I am fascinated by the infusion of his presence and the cultural change that might happen. IT will take time.

And you know a million dollars a month isn't really why Phil is here because?

1) There are truly any number of $60 mil jobs out there where you sit in a high chair, only travel when you feel like it, and essentially are a power consultant?
2) He suddenly realized he's been fhuhucking over his native franchise for all these decades?
3) A vision of Red Holtzman has been invading his daily meditations?

I mean, I trust Phil, happy he's here, but I would honestly have no idea where his impetus for taking on Dolan comes from.

Zen Starphuch:

KloveCentric?

MeloCentric?

LebronCentric?

Other?

Is there a scenario that was back channelled before Phil Signed on that "If PHil Jax signs with Knicks, XXXXX will come play for them in NY!
I don't trust the media to feed me too much.

I know some are very skeptical about Phil and we just got another Starphuch GM who will try, but since its NY will Fail.
Im kinda going conspiracy theory on this being "pre ordained" that some thing will play out that makes the team interesting in some form or another.

Kerr I believe was genuine but GS made him an offer he could not refuse. Phil was cool, he had his contingent lined up. For players the Melo question was always there. Was it "Phil comes, Melo will reup!!" or is it "We'll try to keep him but really, this is not the guy we want in the triangle"?

I don't know, but its fun to speculate none-the-less!!!!

Phil is 72 years old and he's had health problems. While the money is nice--that money is not for him-he won't spend it. I think he took this job as a last hoorah. There is an end game for all of us--what a great opportunity for PJ to end his career being in charge of cleaning up the train wreck of 15 years. We are the anti Spurs.

It's funny we are the one team with no pick in this very attractive draft and the guy who we traded all th assets for has been planing a getaway for months. This does not happen to the Spurs

PHil is 68. At 73 is when his contract is up in 5 years. 68 is not old and this dude is sharp.

His health is good, but he is a 6-8 guy who was a pro athlete and his body is hurting form it. From what we have read, he won't coach because he does nto want to go on the road. There is lots of reference to this opinion.

I agree its not for the money, and more for the legacy. What else will he do? Television? Studio work? Hang with Shaq, Kenny and CHarles? Motivational speaking?

The dude is a spiritual achiever who looks at this as a challange.

Instead of putting that money in Phil Jackson and Fisher, throwing it at Poppavich and Duncan with an entire coaching/managerial staff/trainers, with the same COMPLETE control makes more cents
With Poppavich moving from head coach to the front office, possibly even with Buford, as well, but they have shown multiple times they have the skills needed to

1- DEVELOP talents
2- build a winning culture
3- playing a TEAM concept on both ends of the floor
4- able to get players to SACRIFICE both on and off the court
5- also can be further developed with Poppavich developing and handpicking his pupil (possibly Duncan as a future head coach), selecting his staff from Head Coach/Assistant Coaches, Development Coaches, Scouts, Trainers, etc

Poppavich has developed Kawaii Leanard from the 4th to 6th best player on the team, to rise in just 2 years along with the constant chances from

Robinson to Duncan
Duncan to Manu
Duncan to Parker
Then back and forth from the BIG 3 with Manu fully embracing the 6th man role and coming back from injuries multiple times, along with Parkers up and downs despite his age
and back to all 3 with Leanard,
Now with Leanard being the future of the franchise

with players found developed, drafted along the years like Stephen Jackson, Scola, Danny Green, Gary Neal, Patty Mills, Splitter, Diaw, Bellineli, Bonner, Nando De Colo, many players to play GREAT in SYSTEMs and players that were NOT the top players in their positions/league with players right now like Corey Joseph, Aron Baynes, Jeff Ayres

Talking about consistency, with an evolving system, players, positions, and league
Their entire staff proven they can make something out of nothing and have the ability to keep and have that level of trust that comes with sacrifice, instead of trading their players that signed for less through out their careers

Poppavich takes that NO BS mentality and has full control of his players
Duncan still has the ability to develop (a old school BIG with a twist, with RB's, DEF, POST PRESENCE, 17 footer, passing, BLOCKS, LEADERSHIP), lead/guide, and attract ALL STAR's to come, along with his ability to
Duncan can help develop Tyler, along with future younger players like a Backnaski, and even help a player such as Aldric/Tyler and even Darko (for the vet min)

Poppavich moving from coach to President of Operations
Duncan from player to Head Coach
Possibly Buford/Presti or to work as a GM
Probably most importantly their knowledge, respect, and ability to find/develop talents on players and coaches

imagine a staff of

Tim Duncan
Jeff Van Gundy
Rasheed Wallace
Battier
Edoh
a PG that would be a good coach and help development maybe even Ron Harper or Fisher

along with some of their current and previous coaches wither as assistants, development coaches, previous players, and trainers/scouts that deserve more recognition
they are CONSISTENT, EFFICIENT, and EFFECTIVE, demanding respect from around the league with credibility whether from players, GM's, and

Spurs have 2 late 2nd rounders and the last 1st rounder
I am intrigued to see how and who they select at those picks, seeing if they become role players or STARs with this DEEP DRAFT
Most importantly everything they do is what Phil Jackson is trying to implement, apply, develop, but they have actually done it multiple times and do not lack any experience, except for running the Triangle
And with the money that was thrown to Phil Jackson/Fisher alone, they can pay an entire department and probably even more

We don't know if Phil is good at talent evaluations or if he even prefers euro's.

Their knowledge, experience, in addition to their RINGS, their BB IQ and understanding of the game are completely priceless
They know what winning is, what is it about, how to achieve it, without the need for the top tier talents of the entire league
The importance of consistency, team work, hard work, practice, motivation, balance of VET's and youth, and ability to push the right buttons for each personality vs Talent/Work ethic and risk reward

Quality and Character vs Talent and physical abilities is what separates

Manu vs Crawford/JR Smith
Kawaii Leanord vs Tony Snell/Greek Freak/
Parker vs Irving/Jennings

Duncan > Kobe's career (payed 2x more and is a big part of the reason why they cannot improve much while Duncan took less and has done more)

Why look for the perfect recipe when we have the ability to buy the BEST OF THE BEST that has proven to be able to evolve along with the league
The understanding and need for accountability

No, it is not a guarantee to get them but if Dolan is willing to give up that power and $$$, they certainly would be the most proven and successful to achieve it while staying balanced, effective, yet efficient
Poppavich makes only a bit more than Fisher alone, despite being 100x greater

However, it remains unknown if Dolan will NO LONGER get involved in the future
So throw in some incentives along, an entire TV network, business network, and most valuable franchise in the entire NBA to persuade them
But little coaches have been able to ever achieve what Pop has for his entire career, whether with minimal $, and finding gems from ALL STARS to role players to greater

if

Dolan/MSG $$$ can buy the best talents to manage/attract/develop talents with total support to do so

He most likely took the Knicks job because of ego. The real test or questions come if we miss out on the guys we want in 2015 via cap space. Do we make blockbuster deals or do we just continue to draft, sign lesser guys as free agents, make small trades.

Ego? Phils Ego is huge! Thats a good thing! HE wants power, he wants to teach as well, and that ego needs to be fed success!!

What do we do if we don't hit the home run on 2015 free agent class? I dunno. Fact is a lot of it is not under our control.

Mickey Aronson don't want to go to Tax hell. That is one reason Miami was so thin on the bench. Because of salary structure Spurs starters are on discount deals so the bench can be lush with talent. More important that the system adds value.

Who stays and who goes? Does the system add value to some of our guys or take away from their strength? We even have to ask ourselves do we even want melo?

Pop would last 15 seconds in NYC. You think the media is going to put up with his shinola for longer than that?

Dream on. Or move to SanTone and be happy.

is money all that is needed? There is more to life than money, a lot more, and the older you get the clearer that becomes. Pop gains nothing, nada from uprooting from whatever network he has in SA to coming to NY for what? A money grab? Thats not interesting for these guys. Phil has more than just money reasons for being here.

And I was offered 3x my annual salary to relocate to Asia for a couple years and didnt even have to think about the answer. NO

Fish, all I am saying is, it would not have hurt to try, The Spur's have obviously proven that they have a winning culture
Even if he says NO, maybe Duncan says yes, and we go from there to mimic our own vision, most importantly needing Dolan to stay out of basketball related matters
I could have told you what Phil Jackson has said and done with EVERYONE here, that is waste of 12m per year

There are many disciples out there of Pops and some on his bench that we could try to pry
Now, we can also try for GM's like Buford or Presti
I am saying Pop could be offered the same position like Phil Jackson, while NOT traveling and all the stress that comes with a Head Coach
While he already has the ingredients and know the recipe for success
Phil Jackson needs DOMINANT talents and we do not have any for his system to work with

isnt that why he's here? Either its find star(s) to add to the mix with Melo or if he's gone redo next year. I think MSG was pretty smart with the timing. Get something in here, get something started and have Phil driving the ship when we can essentially rebuild the whole roster in a year from now.

Ron, use your imagination. What came first, the chicken or the Egg?

Jordan's legacy was not formed until he won championships. Not before. Not as a high flying leading scorer getting beaten by the Pistons!

Kobe? Was a wild child and needed to be harnessed. His legacy of wining was galvanized by Phil.

so thinking PHil walks into winning situations is very naive.

He may not walk into Championship situations but he does walk into winning situations with dominant talents. Jordan and Shaq were dominant talents who got to ECFs and for Shaq the finals with Orl.
When Phil had poor teams he lost when he had great teams he won. That really goes for every coach.

However, this is not about Phil the coach this is about Phil the operation's manager. Nobody knows if he is good or not.

Re Pop: Pop came form the Front office down to coach. I do not see him leaving San Antonio for any amount of money.
