After Oklahoma City management filed a complaint, the NBA fined Knicks president Phil Jackson $25,000 for tampering on Monday for comments he made about Derek Fisher.
According to a source, Thunder officials were ticked off Jackson referred to Fisher as on his coaching candidate list last Friday while Fisher was still in the midst of the Western Conference finals against the Spurs. The Thunder, who were eliminated by the Spurs on Saturday, filed a complaint on Monday.
Jackson also may need permission from the Thunder to speak with Fisher about the coaching vacancy because he remains under contract until June 30.
“I kind of know what he wants to do and his feelings,” Jackson said of Fisher on Friday.
“He’s got a family in LA. He’s got little kids in LA. I have no idea if he wants to move his family and come here. There’s so many unknowns. He’s definitely a person on my list who could be a very good candidate for this job.”

We finally get a Pres/GM that communicates with the media and fans, and he gets fined for doing so..

How the hell is that tampering when he never had a convo with Fisher

I find this ridiculous and should be rescinded immediately.

"Article 35A of the NBA Constitution states that it's a violation of the league's anti-tampering rule for any person affiliated with an NBA team to directly or indirectly (i) entice, induce, or persuade, or attempt to entice, induce or persuade, any player, coach, GM or other person under contract to any other NBA team to enter into negotiations for or relating to that person's services or to negotiate or contract for such services, or (ii) otherwise interfere with the employment relationship between that employee and the other NBA team."

You cant say "yes, this current player (Fisher) is one of my coaching candidates".

The key word is "indirectly"....he didnt have to speak to Fisher to violate, mentioning his name was enough. Phil should have placed Fisher in that "unnamed coaches" pool he said he has.

You aren't allowed to comment on other teams players. That has been a rule for as far as I remember. Simple as that. Sure Phil can talk but that doesn't absolve you of responsibility. You have to have a filter.

Total nonsense if you ask me. He was just stating the obvious, that the man's on our radar. What advantage was gained by the Knicks here? Fisher said he was flattered but added that he wouldn't even start thinking about his next move until after the playoffs were over. Like Kerr, anyone out there has the same opportunity as us to retain him as head coach. Ridiculous -- there's nothing here. F it -- money well spent. At least Phil unzipped his fly and went on record as saying he's interested in Fisher, a guy I think might actually be the best candidate for the job even when Kerr was still in the fold. We already lost out on Kerr. Don't wanna lose out on this guy too now. Whatever, rules are rules -- learn from it and move on..

OKC actually filed a complaint which is why they had to act. Kind of lame IMO, but they may want to try and retain whatever leverage they still have in terms of some compensation, which is stupid but that's probably what OKC is doing. I Phil wants to talk to Fisher before the end of June they might want something for the privilege.

I dont think its lame. OKC has a beef. Dont distract my players while they are playing in the conference finals. As it turns out Phil did indeed break the rule. Oops. Life goes on. In the NBA world of riches a $25k fine is like me getting a parking ticket because I didnt feed the meter. I knew if a cop wanted to ticket me he could and I risked it. Life goes on... this is piddly news

The media is painting it like Phil Jackson has had a awful first few months as executive when in reality there is not much to be done at least right away

Phil makes a million dollars a month.

I wonder if OKC still files a complaint if they're in the Finals? Punk move.

If Fisher hangs it up (still not sure from what I hear--he may want to return to play more), OKC might be a good destination for Prigioni. They may want another vet in that 3rd PG role behind Westbrook and Jackson. No matter what, I desperately wanna see some new blood at the point next year. I'm done with Felton/Prigioni.

Also hearing the Lakers may be our chief competition for Fisher, for what that's worth..

Yeah because he lost out on kerr, and he didn't get melo to commit to opting in for the final yr, which is basically strike 1,and a foul ball.

IMO, If he would have kept kerr under the radar, he probably would have been a different out come, or maybe not. One things for certain, he has said more to the fans and media in 3 months then steve mills has said in his entire knick tenure.

I think Phil has to learn that the NY media is a bit different than Chicago or LA. The NY media actually takes pleasure in his and Knicks failures. As a fan I like information but I would prefer that Phil play things under the radar. Specifically with trades.

Sometimes doing nothing is a good thing. Kerr was on his way and from media accounts they were negotiating. Phil appeared to be gracious enough to not put his ego in the way and make it about kerr doing whats best for him and when so, he'd be all in! You don't want a guy in conflict about family issues and having second thoughts.

Same for Fisher, we don't know if this guy even wants the gig. Maybe Lakers want him and he can keep his babies n their same school! But, the lure of having Phil as mentor, and its apparent Phil wants a young guy to mentor its a pretty good job to not turn down!!

Way I see it, we don't need a coach until summer league, and even so it really don't matter as an assitant can do the job as long as those young guys are running a system condusive to the triangle. I doubt you ask a collecton of guys to just start doing something unfamiliar.

Phil got Fined, big whoo! The media coverage and exposure is worth it and than some for knicks branding.

Lets go buy a pick, get some minor trades done and in the next month or so the Melo riddle will also be solved.

Until then enjoy the finals and the Lebron watch that will ensue. Im not expecting anything other than he staying in Miami but who knows.
