Thats a great question and a great idea.

Melo is probably leaning towards walking and Phil is trying to convince him to stay (at a discount).

"I will stay if you coach. Your call"

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Phil won't do it, he is already planning Melo wanting to leave. Kerr probably asked Phil about Melo before making his decision, hence his decision to take the GS job.

ha!- I don't know why people won't accept Phil is not physically able to coach due to his health. Do they think he's going to get even more healthy as he reaches the age of 70? Do people not understand how the ageing process works?

nope

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Ha, to be fair, I think your answer would be no, regardless of what the proposed condition was

What's good for the goose...

Does Phil agree to take less to coach?

i don't think a man with 13 rings, and what looks like two artificial hips, two artificial knees, and obvious bladder and prostate challenges is going to stoop so low as to kowtow to a dude who has won nothing, said he wanted to test free agency before the season even started, and is perched on his elite athlete throne awaiting a line of suitors to come, hat in hand, to bow and kiss his pinky ring for the privilege of his vaunted services.

melo is in for some trouble going forward in his nba career. he seems uncoachable and really is asking for too much money to become part of a winning situation, wherever he ends up.

That is true but he appeared to be ready to take the laker job prior to it being offered to D'Antoni. It appears that he wants to be as hands on as possible without actually being the coach.

I think that whole situation was overblown. Phil was still THINKING about when the Lakers quickly switched up and went with MDA and perhaps his pride made him think he could do it, but his health would still have been an issue. I think he was faced with the prospect of more surgery and having recovered from his last he probably doesn't want to push it that hard anymore. Not when he can have a young protege on the bench doing it for him.

It was awhile ago but I thought Phil was given the weekend to decide and then Mike was hired. There was a lot written afterwords about jim buss being insecure about Phil and the power he would have if he came back.

Do we know for sure Phil wanted back with the lakers?

He was on the verge of taking over the Kings in Seattle

Well that was what was reported at the time. Rambis was one of the sources.
