He's got no coaching experience, was far from an elite player (not that that is required or even helpful in a coach, but I'm just saying), and no other coaches are really being considered from everything that's been reported.
So why would Phil pass up the vetting and pursuit of Marc Jackson, the Van Gundy brothers, and any other proven/successful options. Clearly Stan wanted the Riley package and good for him for getting it with the Pistons. But Kerr wants nearly the same type of money for doing half of Stan's job and without an impressive coaching resume to back it up. Which further fuels the idea that if I'm going to be told how to do my job, then at least pay me way too much. There's an audacity to that in that what it really should be looked at is a mentorship from the winning coach in NBA history. I'd do that job for a mere $500K...hell, even $250K per (not that my wife would have any of it).
Kerr's being given a HUGE and golden opportunity. I know it's his right to get the best deal he can (and that said deal doesn't count against the cap AND that's it's stupid Jimmy D's money), but hardlining anything when you've got no amatuer or professional coaching experience is ridiculous.
I have nothing against the man, but unless Phil's looking at a total gutting and rebuild I would try to get an experienced coach...preferably a proven winner.
