The Jazz are actively exploring opportunities for trading away one of their three first-round selections in next month's NBA Draft. If they did so, player personnel director Walt Perrin suggested Monday, it probably would be so they could pick sooner in the draft's opening round.

"That's one of the options," Perrin said. There are several other options for the Jazz, who will go into the summer's free-agency market well under the NBA's team payroll salary cap — and probably won't have roster room for three rookies next season.

"We have probably more flexibility to do things than any team in the league. We can do a lot of different things," Perrin said. "That's why Kevin (O'Connor, the Jazz's basketball operations senior vice president) and I are in an ongoing process of talking to teams to see if there is a possibility of moving up."

If they do not move into one of the draft's top three spots by striking gold in next week's NBA Draft Lottery, the Jazz will own the Nos. 14, 16 and 21 picks in the June 24 draft.

Besides bundling two picks and moving up, there are other ways the Jazz can either dispose of or defer one first-rounder. Packing it in a player swap is possible. So is trading for another team's future first-rounder. And there is always the chance Utah will choose a foreign player who does not immediately join the team, much like when Russian Andrei Kirilenko was one of its three 1999 first-round choices.

Chances the Jazz will move up in the first round, owner Larry H. Miller told KUTV-Ch. 2 late Sunday night, are greater than 50 percent. Any deal, Perrin suggested, would not happen until well after the May 26 lottery.

"Normally," Perrin said, "those types of trades are done the day before, or the day of, the draft — because you want to listen to everybody. "We are talking to teams now," he added, "but you don't really know what you can do until the draft lottery is over with."

just thought some of you might be interested...Isiah should be actively seeking to acquire one of those picks.

The article clearly states it'd be to move up.

What can Isiah offer them to move up?

My bad.

I still don't see what the Knicks would offer though? They don't need expiring contracts since they already have cap room. How can you persuade them to trade a first rounder of Nazr Mohammed or something like that it just doesn't make sense to me. Other teams can offer more. I'd love to move up though, get to their last pick and take Harrison.

If Isiah has that Mojo thing all hyped up in these neck of the woods, I would like to see what he can do with a late first round pick.

True genious is taking players others did not see. The karl Malones and Scottie pippins are examples of gems found in lower picks.

Dirty Kurty for their #24 and give the starting job to sweets!

Layden obviously was the mastermind that engineered & hatched the master plan that made all other teams pass on the guy in the 1st round...all credit & kudos go to the Genius that is Scott Layden.

scott layden is the guy responsible for the jazz picking john stockton and karl malone. he also made some nice late picks like ostertag eisley and andersen[although they didnt play well for the knicks they wer steals for the jazz] layden has one of the better resumes of drafting with the jazz. he didnt do that well for the knicks-i dont think the management put emphasis on that portion and when he did make some picks sweetney lampe frank williams are good picks. he sure didnt draft boozer which i still dont understand[yeah we had 5 PF but the guy was 20-10 65% at duke!}and he went for obscure big men trying to find another mark eaton. i think laydumb was better suited as a maybe an assistant GM type. the owner who is part of a multi billion dollar business shouldve picked up on that.

If I was Utah Id offer Dallas picks 16 + 24 for Jamison and hope that I could land Arajuo with pick 14. Thats an attractive financial package for Dallas+ the benefit of bringing in two more cheap players with talent.

wasn't that his father, Frank Layden, that drafted Malone & Stockton?

Yes. It was Frank. Scott was a scout who only got a GM job from nepotism. Remember who all those years everyone was talking about how Utah was never able to add that third piece around Stockton-to-Malone? Remember Greg Ostertag? THAT was Scott Layden. He is the worst GM in the history of organized basketball.

Scotty Sterling was pretty bad.

Willis sucked as gm.

Elgin Baylor sucks, but his owner tells him to suck.

Tapscott in the 10 min he was GM might have the record.

Rick Pitino buried the celts as Gm.

Historically, Atlanta and Cleveland had some real bad runs.

Michel Jordan really sucked as GM.

Laydog was no prince of a GM, but history is filled with real bad ones. Starphucked owners make Gm's suck. Sterling, Reed, Donovan (second tenure, Bianchi, and Debusscure. Yeah, Dave's got the ewing pick but remember he had a real bad run before and after ewings pick. Hey, I loved Dave and was very happy he got away from the team to persue other ventures. I know Reed was coach, and GM of Nets, but Can't remember if he was here also?? But he sucked with Nets.
