In his first season as a Knick, he played mainly SG while defending PG and SG's with Dantoni
However, after he suffered his knee injury, he played mainly SG and SF, and probably on switched defended PF's more than PG's with Woodson
He should have been developed as a SG/PG, while with Smith and the addition of Tim Hardaway JR, in addition to Woodson's preference of playing Felton/Kidd/Prigg, he played mainly SF
Iman had the size/strength/athleticism as an advantage playing vs the PG but was not developed correctly with Woodson
He had to even bulk up more to make up for his size to play SF, instead of working on his speed/quickness/foot work/ and handle/court awareness/facilitating/passing etc
Look at Trevor Ariza as a Knick and compare how much he developed on the Lakers with the right fit of talent around him, he was a BIG piece that attributed to a the team in addition to the versatility of Odom and Gasol
Just look at players like Gereld Green, Courtney Lee, James Johnson, DJ Augistine, Kendall Marshall, who were worth absolutely NOTHING at one point this year
However, in the right team, with the right players, with the right fit/chemistry/ and system
Even look at Jimmy Butler *his lead from his rookie year to now when Ronnie Brwer was let go*, Dunleavey (was doing NOTHING in the start of the season), and Tony Sneil
Yes, these are just "role" players but tell me one team that has won the Championship that did not have GREAT role players
With that said, I think we did a horrible job in terms of the development of Iman
Iman has much work to do if he does one to play PG, starting with a better handle, adding better footwork/speed/quickness, court vision/facilitating, and using his physical abilities to harass opponents PG's
While Iman is our best perimeter defender, he is a mismatch at the SF for us
Woodson's philosophies on both OFF and DEF doesn't work and it is something I have stated once he took over from Dantoni
Iso Melo late in games and constant switching while we do not have versatile/athletic/skilled 1v1 defenders like Marion, Battum, Noah, Ibaka, Westbrook, Jimmy Butler, Deng, Ariza, Gortat etc
Worst of all Melo supports Woodson because Woodson's system benefits him and him alone, while the entire team has said multiple times that it doesn't work
But does Melo care? No, because in "Woodson's system" he benefits from it and will always get the ball and opportunities to put up numbers to justify his value in the league
We need structure from the TOP to Bottom, from management, all coaching and development coaches, scouts and players that will WORK HARD and get rewarded for it instead of Woodson's favoritism in lineups and rotations
That is why Phil Jackson was hired, he will not give CA a max contract, because that would defeat the whole purpose of Dolan handing down to keys to him
As Dolan has stated once Phil was hired, "PJ will be in charge of ALL BASKETBALL RELATED DECISIONS"
There isn't much Phil Jackson could do if he decided to overpay to keep him and looking at this year's results it probably best for CA and the NYK's to go separate ways
I hope we can get a sign and trade for him but with the extra 5m added to the salary cap, there are many teams that can offer CA a lucrative contract while having enough talent with the addition of signing him to become contenders just like Al Jefferson has done with the Bobcats and Millsap with Atlanta
