Some unprecedented stuff is happening in the world of college sports. This week, University of Massachusetts basketball player Derrick Gordon came out as gay, and a swim team at the University of Virginia put together a special message for their school's "Diversity Day."

Gordon, a sophomore starter at UMass, is the first Division 1 college athlete to openly acknowledge his homosexuality.

"I just didn't want to hide anymore, in any way," Gordon told ESPN. "I've been waiting and watching for the last few months, wondering when a Division 1 player would come out, and finally I just said, 'Why not me?'"

Gordon has since posted a series of infectiously happy photos on his Instagram account, including the one below, in which he sports a very appropos T-shirt.

"This is the happiest I have ever been in my 22 Years of living...No more HIDING!!!...Just want to live life happy and play the sport that I love..."

some _personal_ research. You know, get up real close to gay people and _really_ learn what they're about. You
sure do seem obsessed with the lifestyle. What else could it be but either curiosity or jealousy that they are living the life that you want to live. Be free, Playa, be free. Stop hiding behind the veneer of hate. We can all see through it. Pretty obvious.

One day you will understand, nobody here hates homosexuals they've been around forever.

Stop trying to twist what i'm presenting.

They are promoting a lifestyle, something that does not need promoting.

People can be who THEY want to be, why promote it
Either you embrace the lifestyle or you don't, its a choice.

None of us would be here if our parents embraced and lived this lifestyle out.

Huh? The same way I wouldn't want people going around tossing the n-word everywhere (this goes for any race), I'm sure people who are gay don't like to hear those slurs used all the time.

And this was more than "some says something about gay people". This is was damn near a hate post.

WTF are you talking about? Playa has been doing this **** for months, if not longer. If Andrew decides to ban him, it would be anything but rash.

We're guaranteed free speech in this country but that does not mean that this means you can be an ass and not suffer consequences e.g. the Duck Dynasty jackass and Paula Deen. Those people were not criminalized via the law but they definitely earned their censorship from mainstream society.


P.S., how many gay male basketball players do you know of in the NCAA? The correct answer is "one". You know how I know that? Because Gordon is the only D-1 player to ever have come out publicly. That's why this is "front page news".

So you're one of those "homosexuality-is-a-lifestyle-choice" conservatives, huh?

Dude, the vast majority of gay people are born gay. They didn't choose to be gay. It's not a "lifestyle" or a FOTM. Gay men and women can not help their orientation. The only reason it gets "promoted" is because homosexuality has been denigrated and marginalized for so long.

It's about time equal rights extends to everyone. It's something worth celebrating.

That said, I don't think Andrew and Martin should ban Playa. Just make sure he knows this ISH belongs in the OT forum. It is NOT Knicks-related.

It's like Bill Russell said on an interview. The only thing thats important is can they play? Thats all!! It makes no difference what their preference is (can they play) If they can then welcome aboard.
I wouldn't care if all the Knicks were gay if they can win me a championship or just play the game at a high level then thats all that matters to me. And if they got cut from the team it won't be because of sexual preference it will be because they weren't good enough to make the team. I 5 to 10 years I think we will have woman playing in the NBA if they are good enough and the NBA let them play.
