I like IJ but he feels like a vet finishing touch on a winning team to me. Not sure he's right for this team. No doubt we could use some more frontcourt help for next year though -- I'd just prefer to go a little younger - let's see if we can uncover a real jewel or two here, players with higher potential upside than Johnson. Here are 4 frontcourt players I'd like to see added to the roster for next year, with or without Melo. They all complement each other very well -- I'd bring in all 4 for summer league with a legit shot to make the team:
Marcus Cousin - 7' 255. Legit C that bangs, rebounds, plays physical and he's got a real underrated offensive game -- nice post up moves, he can put it on the floor and he can really shoot it great out to about 20-22'. This guy would surprise a lot of people, I'm telling you. I always thought he compared favorably to Al Horford. I'd just love to see us have a 5-man that actually has a clue offensively next year.
First 2:30 of vid 1 is against Jordan Hill in college:
Daniel Orton - 6'10" 260. Still needs some refinement and needs to keep up with his conditioning (big thing with this guy; looks like controlling his weight continues to be an issue) but there's so much to like here -- still very young possessing the same untapped ability he had coming outta Kentucky. The man's huge, he plays physical, could develop into a demon on the glass, would bring a legit shot-blocking presence right now and his offensive game shows a lot of potential (who knew he had shooting range out to 20-something feet?). Soup to nuts, I like this guy's current game & potential better than Jeremy Tyler's across the board. Far superior than Tyler in the rebounding/shot-blocking categories and I actually think he might have even better offensive potential.
Richard Howell - 6'8" 250. Look at how DeJuan Blair plays and how smooth Larry Johnson used to finish around the basket -- you get the same exact style outta this guy. Adept rebounder (really pursues caroms and has a great nose for the ball), tough/plays physical and he can really finish around the basket with finesse in a wide variety of ways (taking guys off the dribble from the high post, finishing quickly off the glass with english at different angles using his strength/girth to create space, squaring his man up and sticking jumpers from the mid-range... If there's room for DeJuan Blair in the NBA, there's room for this guy too. He's practically a carbon copy.
Devin Ebanks - 6'9" 220. I've read some refer to this guy as a stretch 4 -- to me he's more of a big SF that could also play some 4 in the right scenario (around a fellow hybrid F like Melo for example, or alongside legit Cs and PFs). Big-time offensive talent -- can spot up and drill it from anywhere showing a much improved jumper from his days at West Virginia, can take guys off the dribble and he can also operate in the post. Very good rebounder for a 3, always has been. This guy would be an excellent complement to a guy like Melo or he could be a great backup for Melo as he'd ensure we'd keep a solid offensive player on the floor at that position when Melo sits. Great cheap SF option if we decide not to retain Melo too...Already showed he belonged in the NBA when he played for the Lakers. A better, more potent offensive version of Earl Clark -- he's more than that, really reminds me of a poor man's Kevin Durant. What's not to like with this guy?
