"The Core Four"???

Total, Total BS...

Bernie was one of my favorite Yankees...
Relevant STATS:

5× All-Star (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001)
4× World Series champion (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000)
4× Gold Glove Award (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000)
Silver Slugger Award (2002)
AL batting champion (1998)
ALCS MVP (1996)

WTF??...How does Jeter, Mariano and Posada go along with this???...

It's a god damn travesty. I l put him in over posada and petite

Only cos core 5 doesn't rhythm. All home grown and all multiple championships

One of the many things from this management that has George rolling over in his grave

More Bernie playoff STATS:

All Time playoff games played:..#3 on the list (121)...
All Time At Bats:...............#2 on the list (465)
All Time plate appearances:.....#2 on the list(545)
All Time runs scored:...........#2 on the list (83)
All Time hits:..................#2 on the list (128)
All Time total bases:...........#2 on the list (223)
All Time Doubles:...............#2 on the list (29)

All done in a Yankee uniform, 4 rings later, what gives????..Just imagine the Knicks bypassing a significant"core" player like that... And this wasn't a utility guy, he was a top 2/3 offensive player for the team...Played center field too...

As a Yankee Fan...Bernie was great. However I think the "Core Four" was coined in 2009 based on four aging stars still playing together. Bernie stopped playing after 2006. Not really a big deal IMO.

I'm guessing that at some point this season the Yanks will roll out everyone of significance that Jeter played with to honor him....including Bernie.

The point is they aren't winning all those rings without Bernie..He was an absolute stud for them in the playoffs..He was the definition of being a core player for most of a decade...4 Championships later..

I'll say this, the whole aura built by George Steinbrenner of an organization of classiness is fading fast..

Paul O'neal is the main reason they won in the first place. His approach at the plate was contagious.

disagree. O'neal was a great yankee but not homegrown like the others. Tino, cone, wells, key had their moments too

The core 4 is Jeter, Posada, Mariano and Pettitte because they all came up in 1995. Bernie debuted in 1991. The core doesn't mean most integral in this reference, it was a nickname for the 4 players that all came up together.

+1, thanks BigRed
Much ado about nothing. I'm sure Bernie truly gives a sht, too. He's too classy for sht like that.

Bonn is right though, we need more anti-JuniorSteinbrenners in the Yankee thread!

Jive Five............

Is Bernie HOF material? He did not break out until age 27. Im not hating on him, just saying.

The other 4 are. Pettite is in an era that won't produce more 300 game winners for a while has 255 wins, and holds the record for 19 post season victories. He benefits form the expanded format and playing for a team that was habitually in the playoffs.......But, he was in that rotation! No Cy young or ERA leading seasons. Just a work horse pitcher who won and was clutch.

The core four all played ball together in Greensboro, NC "Bats" team and came up thru the system together. Bernie never played with them in the minors.

As for Bernie, As a fan I want him HOF but I don't have the objective view.

I'm glad they were willing to spend some money on decent deals this off-season. I was worried that they wouldn't do that at all. It doesn't look like they're willing to do "whatever it takes" to build a WS contender though like George would.
