I give Phil Jackson all the credit in the world. But remember he also had the best players in the world to play for him. We have no Michael Jordan, or Pipen or Kobe or Shaq to play for the Knicks. If Phil thinks he can run this team from a far he better think again.
Let's look 3 years down the road and see what the Knicks will be. In order for Phil to win he must get 2 of the best players on the planet. Do you see that happening. The only way would be if we trade for some 1st round picks but wait!! No on will give us a first round pick because our players are that bad. The only way would be if we tank next season and get the 1st or 2nd pick and if it's a great draft it may happen. We can forget LeBron he just ain't coming to New York.
Phil says we need to get some talent in here and I agree, but how?? This will be Phil Jacksons greatest test as a basketball leader. He needs to coach next season then put in a coach. He needs to first hand get into their minds their heads their brains. Phil must accept the fact that not everyone can play in New York. The pressure and night life is big.
Phil Jackson you have a big challenge on your hands. Can you do it?? Remember you only did it with the best players on the planet.

I don't think we necessarily need stars to build a successful program. Remember that the Pistons were champs in 2004 without a bonafided superstar and the Mavericks were champs with just one, surrounded by a group of geriatrics. Moving forward, I think we need to look to acquire a team with guys like Aaron Afflalo, Danilo Gallinari, Greg Monroe, Jameer Nelson, Brandon Knight, OJ Mayo, etc; guys who can be quasi-all-stars on any given night.

Yes but Jackson got Bynum to play well. Who else did?

Gasol was even more valuable than Kobe in some ways - He was phenomenal those years and off the charts in efficiency (which kobe was not)

Gasol played that way because of Phil.

Gasol was playing great before he was traded to the Lakers. Thats why they wanted him so badly. Listen I'm not knocking Phil Jackson. It's just that he had very good tools and players to work with. For example when Jordan left Chicago to play baseball what happened?? Phil got no championship ring until Michael Jordan came back. Right or Wrong? So he needed superstars to play for him in order to get a championship. I just have a problem with us getting those pieces unless Melo stays and we get another superstar with great players around them.

YOu need good players to win.

Winning validates them.

ANyone with more than one ring has great players.

Papa you sound like Lupica. Phil is not coaching. Get over it. Phil is going to try to build a team, put a system in place. He is going to get some cheap talent and stay competitive . Next year he can add at least 2 stars. Better days are definitely ahead. Patience!!!
fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

We've only got to endure one more season before the decks could be fully cleared. We've waited all this time I think it's not too long to wait for Phil to be able to put his stamp on this franchise. There's no way to know what he'll be able to do next year tho. He might surprise everyone.

The 1st thing is to bring in better leadership in the front office. Phil will bring in qualified people and not just buddies who can't help the team. Then little by little he can set the philosophy of the kind of players the Knicks will target. To establish what a Knick player should be mentally and talent wise.

Thats a great example. When Jordan was out, aside from an awful call by Hugh Hollins the Bulls were favorites to beat houston in the finals. But lucky for us, he effed up that call.

I don't believe that Jackson has ruled out coaching altogether, he's said he was done before. Some have speculated that if things go south that he and Dolan have an agreement that Phil would coach again. I believe its the opposite. If Jackson can build a team he believes is good enough to win a title then I wouldn't be surprised if he steps back into coaching. There is still the matter of Jackson assembling a squad good enough for him to want to coach again.

Yes, having great players helps coaches. But - it takes a very special coach and personality to get elite players to play together, in a system, and that may be his greatest gift.

He won in the CBA, didn't he? Notion that he's only great cause of his roster is bit unfair.
