i wish i knew how to format these ****ing charts. somebody instruct me please.

Starters MP TS% eFG% ORB% DRB% TRB% AST% STL% BLK% TOV% USG% ORtg DRtg
Carmelo Anthony 42:32 .601 .522 0.0 8.3 4.0 30.6 3.7 0.0 12.4 34.8 113 92

not only did he play defense with genuine alacrity last night but check this out:

TS% 60.1 which is well above his average and helped the team's cause. his career average of 55%TS doesn't help and likely harms his team's cause. collins pointed this out... that he had to up his FTA and become more efficient if he wanted to succeed.

but the most important statistics were

34.8% USAGE which is still close to his astronomical average BUT

30.6% ASSIST RATE which is twice his career average

the net ratio is

1.14 to 1

this ratio reflects that last night melo contributed to offensive cohesion rather than destroying or undermining it. these are winning numbers no two ways about it.

the overarching takeaway is that of melo can maintain this ratio then even if he is having an off scoring night he can still help the team.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

nice post

I have been saying that he is capable and he needs to want to change his "me" game to an "us" game.

TS% of 59+ and 5 assists has been all I have been asking for.

Phil knows he can be that top tier star for him if he plays the right way. Not easy to change your way after 11 years.

I still think that CAA pushes him away.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

You forgot to mention that he also did that on Paul George.

Maybe the recent improve play of Chandler and a *finally* healthy STAT is the reason for this.

dk7th, I salute you, your progeny, your parents, and your posting. No matter what you post from here on in, I will always remember this moment.
You have provided the depth of insight and grasp of reality that belies your youth.

I saw heard assists in the 4th quarter! I saw standing O's for Phil! I heard actual MVP chants in MSG that weren't on tape from the Ewing era!
Good things are happening, man!

newyork - don't nitpick.

very good post DK, the problem is can he do that... this has always been the problem...

Also note that amare had a pretty decent night although he had no assists it was good to see him look somewhat healthy....

again these things just don't seem to happen often enough and only seem to happen when a coach is fired or someone new is brought in.. it happened when dantoni quit and woodson came in. Now phil is here.. the key is, can this continue.. history shows that it doesn't... but not to take away from your point... if that can can continue then he can help the knicks.. I just have my doubts that it will.. the games are dwindling and if they can't catch the hawks, which seems unlikely, will they continue to play the same way.. for me, that is the ultimate test.. will you do so, even when there isn't much to play for.. It has to become a habit for these guys..

Well....wow

I do agree though DK. I always thought Melo could do this but wasn't always full committed to. I'd like to see him play like this from now on. It does help that guys were hitting shots and that Amare was playing some fantastic basketball though. I'm more impressed with him than anyone.

Knicksfan: Hypocrite league that fines players after the game for flopping but in the game and with obvious flopping they call the fouls.

yea, pretty much what I am saying as well.. the problem is that he doesn't do it enough.. not nearly enough, but this is the case with a lot of players not just carmelo and that is what seperates them from the Great players...

speaking of amare, he looked good too, but I wish he stops with this talk of getting back to dominating... jeez, those days are gone, he should focus on being a healthy contributor first...

lookit i can't emphasize enough how big an "IF" this is going to be, as in "'IF' melo can maintain this sort of ratio, even going as high as 1.3 to 1, then he will be helping his team win games."

and that means winning games by playing the right way. that ratio i have been emphasizing for years is as good a barometer of his play as anything else.

i think the triangle, if bought into (again big IF) actually helps inefficient score-first types achieve this ratio no matter how poorly they are shooting. if you look at bryant's and jordan's numbers in terms of this ratio you see that they both were at their peak by having a ratio between 1.3 and 1.4 to one.

jackson has to be certain that anthony is not only willing but also able to play this way, less dribbling and more cutting and passing.

if jackson doesn't believe it then melo is gone.

if jackson does believe it, it should provide leverage for jackson to force melo to take a big paycut as a form of "tuition," in addition to providing room for other capable players to come in.

i think ronron has the right idea: structure the contract so melo gets paid more next season and then have him earn much less the following seasons.... EDIT so far as that is possible.

I think Phil already made a few suggestions to Melo to get him to play more like Jordan and Kobe

I disagree. Pay Melo more on the back end to give us flexibly to add pieces in 2015. Melo goes down later at least we have a team that can stay competitive

Stats USG to AST ratio for his career is 3.8 to 1! Ouch.

I am not sure if that is the end all barometer. I buy into TS% a bit more because its consistent though I know it has some flaws too.

so here is what phil is thinking ....
