Whatever happened in the last 12 years is now the past. PJ didnt come here to take commands from Dolan--not for the money at his age. He's here to prove he can win.

I truly believe this team can be salvaged somewhat *as is*. I started the season thinking we can win a championship--but I was wrong. However I think some of the big blunders that came to reality can be rectified.

Problems as I see them

A-Bargs--he was a bad fit for this team he does not play smart or hard enough/highly inconsistent
B-Shumpert--simply NOT an NBA starter. You need a reliable SG in the NBA--Shumpert can stay if we do not get value(as in 1st round pick) but he is on the 2nd unit
C-JR Smith. IF JR can stay out of trouble and stay on his game--he is a quality SG. He was hurt and got himself suspended which cost him 50%+ of this season physically and mentally. I think hes in a good place now.
D-Felton--He is not a good defender and hes an inconsistent PG performer--this is likely an area of change.
E-Chandler--hurt for part of the season Plays well in many games disappears in others--will have to see what type of potential compensation is out there for him
F. We used the bench poorly this year--that is on the coach

Keepers Hardaway JR Carmelo JR Smith Cole Aldrich Jeremy Tyler Amare Stoudemire a few others we have to wait and see what could come back to us--if it makes sense for us.

It's not going to take much to make better use of this roster. I actually think with the talent we have that it would be a good thing to try and teach them the Triangle. The main reason is that it minimizes the role of the PG and limits ISO, while promoting Team BB. There's no way to know for sure if guys would buy in but it would be one way to find out who needs to go and who needs to stay. Also it makes better use of forwards and Centers, which would be a plus for this roster.

With Melo in the post position it would make better use of his skills as a passer and scorer. Our role players would be cutting to the basket, which they don't do enough right now. Then you could also use either STAT, Tyler or even Bargs in the post as well and run the same thing with Melo on the weak side looking to catch and shoot or get into a 2 man with a guard. It's a way to get everyone involved and less predictable. More player motion will make it harder for teams to defend the Knicks. Since we don't really have many options until 2015 this is about the best we can hope for. No more Woody Ball.

In addition to players I am really interested to see who he hires as his head coach and what role he personally has in selecting assistants. Also, will he bring in his own front office team or are things staying status quo with the guys in place. Does Herb finally get removed from the coaching staff? Hopefully some of the much needed changes happen. I agree that his coming signals a new era. Also, it has been nice to read about how much of an influence he had on his former players and how much they respect him.

Former Bulls center Stacey King thinks Knicks could benefit from triangle offense

What could Phil Jackson's triangle offense do for Carmelo Anthony? The sky is the limit, according to Stacey King, the former Chicago Bulls center who won three rings playing in the triangle in the early 1990s.
"Carmelo is at the same stage Michael Jordan was at before Phil put in the triangle," said King, who currently works as a color commentator on Bulls telecasts. "Right now, the Knicks' offense is get the ball to Carmelo and have four guys standing around. The triangle would take so much pressure off of him. He wouldn't have to do everything."
Though there has been no formal announcement, Jackson is expected to be named to head the Knicks' basketball department Tuesday, according to multiple sources. Though Jackson will not be on the bench, King believes he will bring in his own people and, along with them, the triangle offense that he used to win 11 NBA titles with the Bulls and Lakers.
The triangle offense was developed by Tex Winter at Kansas State. Winter was hired by Bulls general manager Jerry Krause to teach the triangle to Jordan in the 1980s, but coach Doug Collins really didn't have much use for the offense. When Jackson joined Collins' staff in 1987, he and Winter became close, and when Jackson took over for Collins in 1989, he decided to put in the triangle.
The major feature of the triangle offense is, well, a triangle created by a center who stands in the low post, a forward on the wing and a guard in the corner. The other guard stands at the top of the key and the weak-side forward is on the weak-side high post.
King said the offense is not easy to learn. "You have to have a high basketball IQ and you have to have players who are willing to make sacrifices," he said. "You practice all these movements and motions in practice and there are times you get kind of bored of it. But then you get in a game and all of a sudden it's like, 'That's why we practiced this so many times.'
"You don't call plays in the triangle. You just get in it. That's what makes the triangle unguardable.''
Anthony, called the Knicks' decision to hire Jackson "a power move" after their win over the Bucks on Saturday. He said he has yet to talk to Jackson and, like most players, doesn't know much about the triangle offense. "Phil knows what to do and how to build teams and how to win, that's the most important thing," he said. "When you know how to win, whether you're a coach or whether you're in the front office, that stands out."
King, who ran the triangle when he was a coach in the CBA, said one of the most important aspects to making it work is having the right kind of center. "The triangle must have a center who can hold the post and can read and react and make the right passes," he said, adding that he thinks Tyson Chandler and Amar'e Stoudemire would be able to contribute in the system.
King believes the Knicks have the athletes to make the system work, though they will need to make some tweaks.
"Right now, you have a bunch of guys who have just been playing off their athletic ability,'' he said. "They haven't been required to play in a structured system. With Amar'e, he had the pick-and-roll in Phoenix. Carmelo has always just been roll out the ball for 30. And J.R. Smith just shoots the ball. It's going to be different in the triangle, but I think it will make them better."

I tend to agree with this concept. I'm all for any offense that by design is TEAM oriented and teaches smart BB as opposed to ISO and DIY BB as we've been forced to watch too much of. Also I LOVE the idea of limiting our awful PG's effect on the offense. They no longer have to make the tough decisions or be particularly special offensively. We often live or die by Felton having a good game. If he isn't aggressive and hitting shots we're done. The Triangle totally removes the PG from the equation for the most part. It also makes limited guards like Shump and Mury more useful. We can gain their defense without having to worry about them creating plays. It sounds perfect for the players we have.

12m/yr on a 5yr may have a bigger influence than you think.

What I would suggest is a wait and see approach.
We have been sold dreams so many times, why would it be different this time?
They have to prove it first and our trust should not be granted that easily.

I googled King after reading the article because I was curious about his coaching experience. Apparently he was pretty successful.
King was named the head coach of the CBA's Rockford Lightning in 2001. The team reached the CBA championship game in 2002 with King as coach.[4]

All I Know is that when Phil, Tex and the staff he put together took over, the Bulls took off. I do believe that the players we have now have severely underachieved and could play MUCH better with a more clear direction. Phil brings a proven system and style of dealing with people that we haven't had and that's a huge part of the "New Era". We may have brought in big names before, but none with such a clear VISION of how to win as Phil brings with him. Also none with the clout to truly make Dolan back off.

It Think Shump and Bargs might benefit actually.

Felton, Priggy, and JR might have to go. Asking JR to do anything might be a stretch.

This is pretty easy to replicate Phils teams.

Bargs is in the role of Gasol for 7 foot white euro.
Shump for the athletic big 2.
Melo is Jordan/Kobe
JR is the nutty rodman
Fredette is the White long range bomber (paxton/kerr/Hodges)
COle is the Longly/whennington stiff honkey.
Tyler is horance grant

I posted this in another thread but thought it was more appropriate here.......I Was thinking about Shump's role now that PJax is aboard and how he might be rejuvinated. I can see Shump auditioning for the Ron Harper/Brian Shaw role of big combo guard next year being that the cap will limit us in what we can do. Shump really needs to work on his handle, mid range jumper and pace, but he has the physical tools to play that position...

He needs to bring a defensive culture. Despite how the offense has looked at times, since Bargs been out knicks ranked 4th in efficiency.

If we are going to try this again.... After hiring the president/gm, they need to hire a coach immediately. No matter what happens it can't be Woodson again. It has to be a hand picked guy by Phil, who shares the same vision for the team. They have to be an extension of the gm. That way there's no confusion like we have here in ny. What made Phil so successful is the fact he had a GM behind him that worked to improve what was going on out there on the court. One of the most underrated stories to Phil's success is how the GM always found the right guys to fill in the blanks around the stars, not once but 4-5 times on two separate teams. Phil has to be that guy and he had to find his guy.

Was thinking the same thing about Ron Harper. It took a couple of seasons for Harper to gel with the offense after joining the Bulls. Shump is also having his own issues on offense, but I never thought he would be so allergic to the rim.

I could see Jackson keeping Shump as a reserve. Shump has to learn how to make a defender go the wrong way when he gets near the rim. Until he learns that he won't live up to his high potential.

Ron Harper was a very good player before he got to the Bulls. The fact he was able to sacrifice and play point guard of all things shows you that. Shump is not the caliber of player Ron Harper was at no stage in his career. Shump is still young but at a similar age Ron Harper was the man.

The problem i have with shump is his IQ is sooo looowww, but has improve since his first career NBA game, but only slightly as he doesn't gamble as much. But I can't stand to see him race down court with no idea what he plans on doing when he gets there. You know how you see someone floor it to a red light and you just look at them and shake your head..like dick

To be fair, I kinda like when he pushes the ball on those plays -- if we had some more guys that could get out and run the break with him a little more, he'd have more of a chance to make something happen on those plays but I hear ya for the most part -- the IQ isn't great but the biggest thing I see -- he just can't drive and convert at the rim with regularity. Once in awhile, he'll throw one down hard (or attempt to throw one down) and you're like 'there ya go, Shump. Gimme more!" but for the most part he struggles way too much trying to take his man off the dribble and finish. I think it's a combination of tightening up his handle (trusting his handle more), increasing his body control and not shying away from contact/absorbing contact better (needs to get to a point mentally where he expects and wants the contact)...If the plan is to retain him, he's gotta spend a majority of his off-season working on driving and converting at the rim with contact -- set up some chairs/obstacles all around the half court, have guys set up close to the rim with those blockers ready to bang him as he finishes, use real human players going full speed playing defense on him (I'm talking the old NBA defense from the 80s & 90s -- bang him, put hands on him, foul him--don't make it easy). Given his size and athleticism, I think this aspect of his game could be improved. Shump still has value -- his defense has always been a plus and so is his jumper-shooting, which is better than we all thought it would be. Just needs to improve his off-the-dribble game in a big way.

I thought The Starphuckin Era was already well established...

I don't see this as a shift in philosophy. I still see Jimmy D jamming his fingers in all the MSG pies the second his petulant nature rears its head
