With phil on board it will be a change for the better no matter what melo ends up doing.
Interesting. You may be right, although I kinda feel this is a move to hopefully get Melo to stay, as in 'look at this successful guy we just added to the mix to help build the team around you.' Also feel Phil wants the star in his prime -- he might feel he needs that in order to win and have success: Jordan/Pippen, Kobe/Shaq, Melo/? The whole focus might be to get Melo a bonafide 2nd star player and go from there. We'll see.
That's actually not a terrible plan -- I could go either way--keep Melo or break it all down and start anew. Not sure if Phil's the guy who will choose the latter.
I favor a little bit of both -- keep Melo but break down most of the rest -- trade off Chandler, hopefully JR/Felton as well, maybe Shump for a draft pick, allow Amar'e/Bargnani to expire, etc.. Re-tool with mostly young players either through the draft (difficult w/o any picks going in but absolutely make the attempt) or with some promising young, cost-effective FAs. Ride it out next year trying to remain competitive until we can clear up some cap room and then make a run at a top FA(s) in the summer of 2015.
