Everything he did failed or ( to put it mildly) came up short. If you want to talk about his biggest acquisition (signing tyson chandler)prior to this season, we had a winning record when he was out thanks to kmart (who's just another vet he signed that can't play a half of season)

All of the vets he signed(aside from kidd) couldn't make it a half of season and he traded brewer for pennies on the $1 after 30 or so games). He signed guys with mini 3 yr deals the failed to make it pass 42 games.

Signing kidd for 3yr was a great move, but how dumb was it not to secure a 2nd season some how in that contract.

Now im not sure who's truly responsible for the AB for Novak trade, but considering how novak fell into woodsons dog house, and he's love for Bargi, im betting he push the button on that trade.

Jr and felton were probably the best available at the time so you can't knock him for those 2.

I know he had nothing to do with not resigning lin cause he was hiding from the media after that ridiculous move.

So for all the dumb **** dolan does, how can you knock him for firing grunwald, even the guys he did sway to sign here ( jr signed more so cause of melo, tyson signed because of amare and melo, and felton wanted to be in NY ever so badly)he really did very little and infact is very much responsible for this BS talented roster that don't mix.

Every player he brought to the knicks have been a one hit wonder

KT
Brewer
Lin
Jr - one good season
Felton- One good season
Camby
novak
copeland
kidd
sheed
Mwp
Beno

The more i think about it the more i'm convince he was an idiot, the 54 wins isn't enough to over shadow that.

how is it grunwalds fault?

Copeland came and produced, he doesnt produce for indy because hes on the bench
Lin is still a great player
Got us a 2nd rounder for brewer who was and is a bench warmer
Kidd was great but woodson played him 47mins a night
Jr played great, but who doesnt in a contract yr?
Overpaid for novak
overpaid for camby
Got raped in the bargnani trade

There are too many moving parts to just heep it on Grunwald door steps...Everyone had a part in the poor play of this team...The Owner, the GM, Melo can't keep his mouth shut, JR's many issues,Fans and the Media telling Shump he is better than he actually is...I just pray Tim Jr isn't listening...Felton and his wife, a gun Ray??, really???, Chandler plays half the time but blames others...The coach seemingly not on top of his game not calling time outs when he should, etc, etc..Bone head play after bone head play down the stretch..It just builds and takes the starch out the effort and competing the next night...Bottom line is, they weren't as good as a 54 win team last year...I don't think they are as bad as they are playing right now...We have to start three guys who should not be starters in this league...I can go on...

No picks, no cap space, an immovable cap hit in amare and a star in his prime that gives you a chance of winning. What would you do?

Aside from amre and melo, grunwald is responsible for this entire roster, including the hiring of the coach.

So if your saying how was grunwald suppose know that jr, felton, tyson and anyone of the players he brought in would turn out like this, then thats the lame ass excuse he gave dolan which is why he got fired.

How did he know Camby, KT, bargi, sheed, tyson, kmart (notice there all big men) were going to break down, and not be able to give us a full season if you did your research you would have known..

How did he know kidd was going to bounce, by looking kidd dead in the eye and getting him to solidify a 2 yr deal barring injury..

How did he know ray was going to fall off in just the 2nd yr of a 4 yr contract. by doing your research (he's been inconsistent from day 1 of his career) 2 yr deal team option on the 3rd.

How do you keep lin from signing a poison pill contract, the same way you got JR to sign for cheap..idk think of something creative the way you did with JR.

How do you keep Sheed around, hire him as an assistant on the bench instead of (no impact whatsoever) herb williams.

As much as i love Amare for all his hard work, billups had more of an impact on melo then any other player not name KIDD..and amares contract was twice billups

How do you keep copeland (who fit right in to woodson system a guy allan houston scouted for 2 yrs) , by recognizing talent and signing him to a 2 yr/1yr team option from the get go)

These are just a few minor things he could have done to keep the train on the track, where you had at least a little margin for era..

Grunwalds moves are equivalent to some one landing a great job but gets fired 3 months letter, or the company lays him off for one reason or another. It's either you didn't do your job, (which is on you) or you didn't do your research..

good thread, thanks. bigger issue to me is the "Big Miss", where, in noble effort to mimic Miami's big three, they combine Melo with Amare (should anyone have figured out that wasn't a good match?), and, waste the great amensty gift to free up for Tyson. On paper - great strategy - out from a decade of cap space hell, combine three stars, and go for it.

Dolan , moving on from the Isiah disaster, did everything right - hires Walsh, spends big, and goes for it. It didn't work, but, shows me they want to win, just failed on this strategy. Given contracts and cap, will take long time to clean it up.

I was wrong about Grunwald. Thought he did a good job last year and moves this pre-season. But looking back at his short tenure as official GM....it has not been too good IMO

• Signed Jeremy Tyler
• Signed Prigoni
• Traded Brewer to OKC for a 2nd Rounder
• Drafted THJ

The Bad
• Signed and Waived James White.
• Re-signed J.R. Smith to a multi year contract
• Re-Signed Novak for a large multi year contract
• Signed Kidd using the exception in July 2012 and had him retire the next June
• Traded for Felton and Kurt Thomas in July ’12 (Thomas was waived the following April)
• Re-Signed an old Prigoni to a multi year contract
• Signed Rasheed Wallace in October 12 – had him retire in April 13.
• Signed Solomon Jones in April and Waived him 3 days later
• Signed Beno Udrih (later bought out)
• Signed MWP (later bought out)
• Drafted CJ Leslie
• Signed Chris Copeland but did not include 2nd year team option

The Ugly
• Traded for Marcus Camby who basically DNP – gave up Toney Douglas, Josh Harrellson, Jerome Jordan and two 2nd round picks.
• Chose not to match Lin’s Offer Sheet.
• Signed Chris Smith in August 2012 – Waived him in October 2012. Signed him again in August 2013.
• Gave up Picks (including a First Rounder) in trading for Bargnani

The Indifferent
• Exercised 3rd year and 4th Year options on Shumpert
• Signed and Re-Signed Kenyon Martin
• Signed Quentin Richardson (obviously no longer with team)
• Signed Cole Aldrich and Toure Murry

Leslie signed as an undrafted free agent right after the draft. Sheed was offered a job by Woodson but his family is in the Detroit area. Grunwald goes from being praised for finding cope in Belgium to being criticized for the contract cope signed. Grunwald usually tried to sign guys to team options when he could in the past. He used those guys in trades later. Pablo's agent said grunwald pushed really hard for a team option on Pablo in year two. Not sure why Solomon jones is mentioned. He was on the Knicks for less than a week but did play for Woodson. Sol is on the bayhawks and certainly could be had if the Knicks wanted him. A lot of one year league mini deals being mentioned as failures. Grunwald was in a tough spot. His 15th man was supposed to be a big time contributor and if he wasn't it counted as a fail.
