Everybody including Amare knows his next contract will be much, much smaller.

Amare would be taking up the space of a young player. Only if Amare takes the minimum salary as a payback and to help us win a championship.

Would it be smart for the Knicks to ask STAT to opt out this summer to sign a long term 5 yr deal for 5-7 years. That's a lot of money but is it worth it to get a head start in FA in 14?

5 years is the max a team can offer, now even at 5x5, STAT would be leaving money on the table that 1year of his deal and 1-2years of a vet min deal would be more
Even at the right price * if above the vet min*, I have mixed feelings about keeping STAT in 2015, I wouldn't mind it but we just don't know which STAT we would be getting
