My friend just gave me his thoughts on what the Knicks should do this offseason. I think this is feasbile and would help the Knicks:
1) Trade Frank Williams, Mutumbo, and Cezary to the Hawks for a re-signed Steven Jackson. The Knicks get to save the MLE (this will be important later) and get Jackson. I'm just not confident in Houston, and I think Jackson would help the team on both sides of the ball.
2) Use the MLE on Etan Thomas/Chris Andersen and Mike James. I think James is a really good player, averaged 10 points per game when he was starting with Boston. He's a capable scorer off the bench at PG, and I think Andersen can be had with a bit more than the LLE. I'd try to use it on Thomas first, but I have a feeling he wants the entire thing.
3) Try to trade for Tyson Chandler. Last week I proposed Harrington and KT for Chandler and JYD, and still think they'd do this.

Just looking at the Knicks team I think you need to add depth and youth. All the teams in the playoffs use their benches a ton and the Knicks really didn't go past 7 or 8, so my primary goal would be to get some more players here. Also, I think going in the direction of youth and athleticism is the right move. Chandler, in my opinion, is the equivalent of getting a polished first round pick. If his back's alright I still think he could be a great player, he just needs to get out of Chicago.

PG: Marbury, James
SG: Jackson, Anderson (Houston-IL w/ knee problems by Nov.)
SF: TThomas, Penny
PF: EThomas (if they got him), Mohammed (if no Etan), Sweetney
C: Chandler, Andersen

That team is athletic and young. I'd rather be a .500 team with young athletes as opposed to have a group of overpaid, aging stars from yesteryear. If Thomas took these steps or steps like it, they would be moving in the right direction.

I really like this. I hate giving up Frank Williams but Stephen Jackson is worth it and Mike James is a better fit behind Marbury in my opinion. Frank Williams isn't going to get much time unless he backs up both the 1 and 2 and clearly Stephen Jackson is a better fit at the 2. For the 15 minutes to spell Marbury, Mike James would give us so much. He's got a better shot than Frank Williams and is just an absolute monster on the defensive end. When him and Lindsey Hunter come in for Detroit they pressure opposing guards the entire length of the floor and create so many turnovers. He gives energy and intensity off the bench and would make people forget about losing our hero in FW. We may even be able to get James with our lower level exception.

Although I love both Chris Anderson and Etan Thomas, don't forget about your original thought about bringing back Doleac. Ty Chandler gives us the shotblocking and Doleac would give us the pick and roll with Marbury. We also still have shots at guys like Dampier with our MLE.

Both Frank and Marb are good trading chips. One of them will probably be gone. I think the Knicks could get more for FWill than SJackson.

If they could get Etan for the MLE and James for the LLE I think they'd be in good shape even though they wouldn't have a bigman for the time being to run the pick-and-roll w/ Stef.

If they don't get Etan, I think it could be split on both Doleac and Andersen.

With Thomas and Sweetney on the floor at the same time, you have to imagine much of the rebounds would wind up in their hands.

While I like your thinking, the fundamental problem with this trade is you're a year late. The Hawks aren't looking for stiffs with ending contracts anymore. They've already completely cleared their cap. They want young players. No way they take Deke and Trybanski. No way, jose. I think Othella is the most underrated trade piece we have. He's short, but he plays with more heart than anyone on the team (with the notable exceptions of Starbury, Sweets, and Frankie) and he's in the last year of his contract.

Apologies, I misread and when i reread, i see that its basically frank williams for Steve Jackson with the big stiff ending contracts thrown in for filler. still not sure if they would do this, but it certainly makes more sense.

I don't think Atlanta would want Frank Williams. They have Jason Terry. If they get a pure point to play with Terry, he has to be bigger. Maybe Frank is big enough, maybe they saw the NJN series where Frank was playing defensive PG and Marbs was playing offensive PG. But I think the MLE is best served to acquire Stephen Jax.

I don't know if Chris Andersen is leaving Denver, but that's an intriguing possibility. He or Doleac would be nice adds off the bench. Damn, Denver sure is deep...just wait til they add Quentin Richardson or someone like him this summer. I just hope Denver doesn't want SJax.

I'd rather have doleac back than anderson. The pick and dole was a fabulous weapon we missed badly. Dole was a tough working guy, we should go after him again. And trade KT, asap.
