Celtics Re-Sign Mark Blount To Multi-Year Contract

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has re-signed center Mark Blount to a multi-year contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

"We are happy to have Mark back," said Executive Director of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. "He provided us great energy last year in games and in practice, and gave us quality shot blocking and rebounding. We feel that Mark is still improving as a player."

Blount completed his second stint with the Celtics last year after being acquired from Denver, along with Mark Bryant, in exchange for Shammond Williams and a second round draft choice on February 20, 2003. Over 27 games for the Celtics, the 7-0, 250-pound center averaged 4.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in 19.2 minutes of action. Blount appeared in all 10 of the Celtics postseason contests, averaging 3.1 points and 3.6 rebounds while blocking eight shots.

Originally signed as free agent by Boston on August 1, 2000, Blount appeared in 64 games his rookie season, posting averages of 3.9 points and 3.6 rebounds, while leading the team in blocked shots with 76, the most by a Celtics rookie since Kevin McHale rejected 151 shots over 82 games in 1980-81.

see what i mean, it isnt easy in the fa market. boston was nothing more than an mle player and just last week blount made it sound like he was gonzo for sure--a week later he is off the market. i have to believe that the hawks arent stupid and realize that jackson is young and talented enough to be a core player in rebuilding--possibly on the cheap. thats the advantage a team has even with unrestricted FAsd they have until july 14 to sign their own.

good point, but even more reason to keep assets as trades are easier to do. This is the other reason you want to hang on to draft picks, but Im still ok with the Marbury trade.

I see how GMs from other teams were able to get guys like Brad Miller and Jamison when all they were really doing was taking on payroll. Hopefully Isiah can engineer those kinds of deals without getting fleeced. We know Layden was a disaster. Lets see Isiah get us a Dampier, Rasheed, Camby... this is the real test.

I thought the Marbury trade was good but based on what he gave up not hard to accomplish. Same with the TT/KVH trade, no big deal. Now lets see if he can get a FA here, or turn Nazr into trade bait, moving into the first round, etc...

i attribute this to doc rivers' signing. he probably told ainge to re-sign him.

That's why the Knicks have to make roster moves quick cuz no one is gonna wait....besides you want to know who your teamates are before september so you can focus on basketball. Antoine Walker touched on that saying he hoped that if he's traded it's before August so he can get focused on the team.

I think as soon as it's clear to make moves Isiah will make the first. Isiah knows....I expect a draft day trade. He'll come up to the podium or to the TNT desk and announce it....or behind the curtain talking to Peter Vecey.

by the time FA comes on July 17, I expect all the bigger names to be paid for the most part and signed with their teams. with no draft picks it will take trades to move guys around barring the 10% miracle of selling the MLE to a player who wwould make more.

The Blount signing has Doc Rivers off and running at the races..whipdeedo. Zeke did some pretty damn good deals to prepare Lenny for his summer camp. If anything we need to start developing players with emphasis on defense. Kareem should have some kind of big man clinic this summer. And NY's best trade should be an MVP type player.

It's not like the Knicks could just pluck one out of the sky. The only one the Knicks have a shot at is maybe Vince Carter because he's injury prone. I just thought of that as I type to you.

Who else do the Knicks have the slightest chamce at getting? Elton Brand is another guy but he only comes to the Knicks if the Clippers are gonna rebuild. If they decide they could win now then Brand is not gonna be traded.

No one seems to like Shareef Abdur-Rahim on this board.

That's just about it as far as trading for a guy with any big time skill.

Many moons ago, on a forum long lost forgotton, I distincly remember you pulling for AI to be traded to NY only for Ice to come up with some off-the-wall excuse why we couldn't get AI. What happen? but since you mention Carter (lol) what do you think of T-MAC in the mix

Yeah I wanted AI when Philly was doing bad last season. This season was exactly what the AI philly drama was gonna lead to.

That Philly GM is borderline about to be fired.

T-Mac? Orlando would be better off letting him walk.

The Knicks best chips to offer is KT, Mutombo, Othella, Cezary Trybanski, Sweetney and Frank.

Now you pull a T-Mac out of that. If Orlando decides they wanna rebuild then why the heck not. Like I said Vince, and Brand fall under the same prayer. Will they decide to rebuild. If they do I think any combination of these players could get it done.

Alright, for those who say that Atlanta will 'hold on' to Stephen Jackson - He can opt out to become an Unrestricted Free Agent. I don't think it's really Atlanta's choice.

And for those who say he can't defend, that's just not true. Obviously, Atlanta played no Defense last year, but in a good system, SJAX will shine defensively. Think of how Hedo looks on the Spurs now. You can't say just because a team doesn't work on defense that a player CANNOT play defense.

I have a lot of faith in Sjax. I would sign him. And unlike crazy people saying we should trade our multiple assets for JRich, I'd like to try and get someone the Knicks can actually attain. Much has been made of the many assets we have, I think it's a lot of bollocks. I'd say the two or three we have over the summer are Frank, Kurt and Nazr
(if you want to give up on Nazr, which I don't). That leaves Frank and Kurt. So sign Sjax, and turn Kurt and Frank into a young athletic Power Forward like Chandler, Swift or Gooden. No one is going to trade for expiring contracts over the summer, they'll only trade for those at the deadline in February.

Also, this entire post is IRRELEVANT.

That article you posted is from July 16, 2003!!! No one can sign free agents yet! Mark Blount will be opting out of that multi-year deal, because it pays him nothing and he hates Danny Ainge. Whether he decides to stick around for Doc Rivers is another story, but no one will know until July 14th at the EARLIEST. That's 2004, by the way!

where do you see the date on the article?

Blount completed his second stint with the Celtics last year after being acquired from Denver, along with Mark Bryant, in exchange for Shammond Williams and a second round draft choice on February 20, 2003.

but if it is an old article, then this is damn funny...my bad.

its on the URL for one...

Also... look at the NBA.com transaction pages:
http://www.nba.com/transactions/current_month_transactions.html

There are deadlines and dates that teams and players have to follow and Blount isnt a FA until he opts out and he cant do that until this summer.

Its just posted on any transactions pages or anything like that.

Dont sweat it.. its funny if you think about it.

By the way thats the end of last season, not this one. He got traded end of last season, then last summer signed a 2 year deal with the 2nd year being a PO he will no doubt opt out of.

The more I think about it the more I think we can get him. Just look at how a guy with limited talent like Nazr thrived with a penetrating PG like Steph. He's a good fit for our style of play and what we need.

for once, ny seems like an attractive place to play for free agents. i initially thought blount going to philly was a no-brainer b/c of jim o'brien but with steph and allan, he really could thrive here. but then again, right now, miami seems like a more attractive place and they could use a center.

i guess we'll know what isiah is all about in the next few months.
