I think that it would be in the best interest of both parties. For one, the Knicks could be given the opportunity to exhaust every means to improve the team with Melo. That'll give us a little wiggle room to see if we can get guys here that he can gel with e.g. Evan Turner, Omer Asik, Ramon Sessions, etc. If that fails, then Melo could always leave in 2015 when Chicago will still likely have cap space. It's not like Melo would be hurting for money after opting in. He'd still be owed $23 million and would still retain his Bird Rights, as well as the option for a max salary. Seems like both sides would benefit from that.

Chicago will have cap space after this season when they amnesty Boozer. Best thing for Melo is to opt out. Melo don't care about both sides and I don't blame him, he should look out for whatever going to make him happy and rich.

Once you get a few mil (certainly less than $10 mil), you're set for life. So hurting for money isn't even worth discussing. That's not how people think.
Melo isn't going to pass up on about a hundred mil.

The Bulls will only have $14 million in cap space, which is $9 million less than what Melo would get by opting in. I understand the need to do what's in one's best interest though. I personally think that this would be in his best interest moving forward because we represent his best opportunity for maximizing his salary.

Tell that to Antoine Walker, Vin Baker, Kenny Anderson etc. No one can be certain what the future brings. I'll never begrudge any person for getting the most money they can (as long as it's legal). But yeah, I'm not worried about any team outbidding us in this landscape. Money won't be the primary motivation for Melo if he leaves.

he should opt out and take less money for the max years we can give him. But more like $15M per - not $30M per.

Can't the knicks give him a deal that ends in 16, then resign him for what ever they can, seems like the best deal for everybody.

for most people in the world a few million is more than enough to live a great life.. for guys like that, a trillion dollars would not be enough...they would find a way to blow it...

I am not sure how much Vince Young has made in the NFL but he filed for bankruptcy recently. These guy need to put away some money in case things don't work out perfectly.

A commonly held misperception of athletes is that they blow their money on frivolous things. Some do, like Allen Iverson, but others like Antawn Walker, Christian Laettner, etc. spend their money on investments that go belly up. When you get money, the goal is to figure out how to use it to make more money. Those guys tried to do that and unfortunately lost close to everything.

I think that would be the best option for the Knick's and MELO together
if he doesn't opt out so he can actually recruit players in 2015
No one will be coming in 2015 if he signs anything close to a max extension this summer because there will be no money left to target a core with enough talent to contend
Only one he can recruit is James White and Chris Smith if that happens....

For instance, if he opts out in 2015

Target

Kevin Love 15m
Rudy Gay 10m
Melo 15m (possibly even less but have a player option and handshake under the table with Dolan to opt in 2016 and then get compensated for

and a PG with Dragic (7-8m) or Lin (3-4m)

Most of the above players might have to take less but would be good enough to be contenders and can make up money in endorsements in NYK

Hopefully if we can get Poppavich and Tim Duncan (for for exemption or vet min deal) it would only help the recruiting process as NO ONE wants to play for Woodson because he is clueless

If we can add Trevor Ariza for the MLE this summer and make those moves above, I believe we would be instinct contenders in 2015

I'd never want to see Rudy Gay (JR Smith 2.0 without the character issues) in a Knick uniform. And Duncan WILL retire a Spur, and Popovich along with him according to his accounts. I'd obviously love to have both aboard though.

The coach we need to be looking for is either Tom Thibs or some young, upstart with potential. As far as the 2 stars to surround Melo with, I think Marc Gasol and Kevin Love would be optimal.

Nah, he should go for the big payday especially before he catches Roseitis or some other big injury bug that's going around.
