What if "I will look forward to opting out and being a free agent" was constructed by MSG?
With Melo/CAA approval.
There is little downside to this statement in the event the team succeeds or does not as the drama and tension keeps his name open and by that expands his brand recognition while he is the 2nd leading scorer.
If he actually leaves I think he damages his brand unless he walks into a very good winning situation. If he walks to the Lakers and does not work out he will be blamed AGAIN for booting MDA and tarnish the Kobe image. I don't see Lakers going all in on him and a roster that looks great after. Does Kobe come back and Stay back? Nash have anything left? No center. Thin bench.
Clippers have to make a trade. Bulls have room and can rebuild WITH him and Rose. He has the legacy of Jordan, no sure fire situation and La La is in LA. Who else has the cap space and a team he can put them near the top?
So, if Melo returns he returns with some fanfaire, returns with a positive image and hope.
Question is what is the vision at MSG to build around him?
Its a "what if" theory that MSG fabricates this season long drama. Lets be real, while Knicks will outwardly speak only in terms of "winning" they did fire Grunwald, hired a CAA saavy (both have two "A's" don't they. See the connection??)Mills guy who is well educated exec type and perhaps thru him employ a system of advanced metrics using Mark WinkeyDink and others. Did they know a troubled season was upon us? Seems Barkley and "37 wins" sure as hell figured it out.
The drama builds interest. Losing adds more drama. We are eating this up. We should be watching other teams instead of the trainwreck.
Instead attendance and Viewership does not suffer.
