He needs time to get numbers and have value, and when he's played well he's helped the team. Sitting him to rot or banished doesnt help anyone. He may not be an asset but you can hopefully trade him for another guy looking for a change of scenery.
The notion of coach's ruining a players trade value makes little sense. Teams are not stupid, they do their homework and JR's play tells a story. His off court antics are documented. If the knicks know the kid is in trouble or raging hard off the court and don't disclose its not good business and the league seems to take care of this by itself.
Nobody wins by "ruining" a kid. Nobody. I can't imagine a team wanting to take him on unless its in february for a playoff push but he has two more years on his contract. ITs why Nate gets short term deals.
BTW, my opinion on Nate is he takes care of his body and is ok off the court but has some personality disorder that makes him a nutjob and annoying longer term. JR is just a very immature man.
It doesn't so much change teams view of the player, but it does alter the Knicks negotiating position. If a player is suspended or benched by a team, there is now a distraction- the team HAS to get rid of him, therefore the other teams can offer less or even ask for some sweeteners
You think teams don't know what going on? You think they don't know about all his legal troubles, what he was like in Denver, New Orleans and him clubbing, weed smoking? Then look at his shooting %? The Elbow meltdown? You think GM's don't talk to his former coaches? Former teammates? Guys retired not with teams now? Think its a big old secret and benching him lets the cat out of the bag?
Think its good business among teams to trade a player who might be going thru either personal drama for what ever reason and not disclose it?
Ujiri: Hi Steve, can we discuss JR?
Mills: Sure, how about a swap for Lowrey? How is he feeling?
Ujiri: Hes great, you got his tape?
Mills: Kids playing good. His health?
Ujiri: His knee is holding up well, i'll kick over his MRI, ortho reports and have your doc's look at it! How is JR?
Mills: His numbers are down since last year, his knee is fine, we'll send over his stuff too!
Ujiru: Why you trading him?
Mills: Um, well, yeah, Why you trading lowrey?
Ujiri: We going youthier, his contract is expiring and ownership wants to reboot. JR over his clubbing? His Weed suspension? ShoeGate? emotional state with Chris gone? Spoke to some folk around the league and it seems like he really has not changed.
Mills: How do you know?
Ujiri: Im just going on what I read. Im not stupid. If he was playing like he did last year then thats one thing. Mike Jordan was a degenerate low life but was money day in and day out. Not interested.
Mills: Was it because we are benching him?
Ujiri: Its because work is Woodson is a high integrity man, even George Karl says it, and his reputation is very good, for him to get frurstrated with him after all the garbage you guys ate its no wonder. Throw in a 1st round pick and I'll take it too ownership!
Mills: You took all of them.
Ujiri: Damn, forgot about that. So
rry. Congrats on the new gig.
Mills: yeah, Dolan pays well and while the little dude got his issues, I got one of his condo's, a 4 bedroom with fireplace overlooking the park, lots of jet perks, and killer comp package. Just have to listen to his band a lot but they are really not that bad. You?
Ujiri: Sounds great! Im gonna turn this gig around, rake in 9 mil over 3 years and then your gonna hire me to bring in washed up Lebron?
Mills: Can I have one of my picks back??
