Look at things this way:
We went 25-22 with Marbury (and all sorts of injury turmoil with Houston , TT's hammy, Mutombo's "abdominal problem", KT's pinky, FW's freak hammy injury and family loss) and numerous roster moves, including the loss of Doleac/KVH and the acquisition of TT/Mohammed, Baker and DerMarr. This projects to a 44 win team...
We very potentially could have been better had we stayed more healthy and more stable... but let's look at the facts:
Our biggest problem is our overall talent level. On paper, we have a top flight PG-- but he's the only player on our team who ranks among the top-10 at his position. Even a healthy Houston would rank at the tail end of the top-10 if he made it at all. You might even wonder if anyone outside of Marbury even ranks in the top 15 at their respective positions. With 29 teams in the league, that means we're usually playing 3 or 4 BELOW AVERAGE starters.
Can we win with only 1 legit producer? Urhm... maybe with great team play and great defense. Our defense had been inconsistent with Chaney and simply poor with Wilkens. Our top priority should be finding a defensive guru coach to whip this team into shape.
We have some decent young players with upside: Sweetney - showed some rebounding toughness--- though I'm hoping he shows us more polished offense next year. The coaches may have limited his scoring opportunities by not calling plays for him.
DerMarr - former top prospect with all of the physical tools of a T-Mac or Darius Miles. Tough to judge him based on limited minutes, but he still hasn't put it all together (low basketball IQ?)
Nazr Mohammed - great physical tools, athletic, great rebounder. Very limited offensive arsenal, no jumper. (low basketball IQ?)
Tim Thomas - great physical tools, good all-around skills; just looking at him makes you think about his enormous potential. However, he's been in the NBA for a long time and his clock is ticking. The hope is that he's a late bloomer (think Jayson Williams formerly of the Nets) and suddenly emerges into a top-10 forward next year. However... you wonder if once again... we have another athlete with a low basketball IQ...
Our championship teams of the late 60s/early 70s were marked by highly intelligent players who really understood the game. On the near-championship Riley/JVG teams of the 90s, we didn't have a whole lot of smart players--- we just had guys who played with heart, guts, and with a chip on their shoulders.
Our current roster has no personality or identity. We don't execute well and we don't display any blue collar grit. Who are we? We just have guys who talk the talk but don't back it up on the floor.
Needs: A pure-shooting wing. With our roster, maybe we should examine a trade for someone like Wally Sczerbiak-- another damaged (and highly paid) player and hope for a return to health. The T-Wolves can definitely use a player like KT. Another shooter will help with our spacing immensely.
Hungry young players (preferably big men) w/ a bit of a mean streak. We're talking in the Starks/Mason/Bonner mold... guys who've been through it all and afraid of nothing. Frank Williams & Sweetney showed signs of developing this kind of attitude, but we'll see. The talk of Stephen Jackson is interesting, cuz he's that type of player-- a guy who plays on the edge who makes things happen. Yeah, he might shoot you into the ground, but you know he's playing with passion.
Smart players (of all sizes) to round out the roster. We're seriously lacking in both veteran and youthful smarts with this bunch. We had heady veterans like Buck Williams and Terry Cummings coming off the bench on our good 90s teams. We had a future coach or two (Doc Rivers & Starks) and future analyst (Greg Anthony) too... Is there anyone left on the team who is well-spoken?
Yeah, we were blown away by the Nets athleticism (Martin/Jefferson), but we could have compensated with smarter defensive play (how about simply staying between your man and the basket?!?!) and perhaps a shotblocker. What's Keon Clark's availability? He's a bit of a nut, but I'd take him over Baker any day...
