While JRSmith provides comic relief, Shumpert has been taking and Makin some important shots. His three game spurt in Texas is less important in statistical terms than it is for changing the tone of a game in the fourth quarter.

Shumpert has miles to travel in his development. Both his temperament and transition game need work. The good news is that winning ballplayers step up in the last five minutes.

The last five minutes is winning time.

On Sunday, Shumpert again asserted himself when it mattered most. After scoring 53 points in his previous two games, he was quiet until late in the fourth. After the Mavericks’ Jose Calderon connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 82-76, Shumpert answered with consecutive baskets for the Knicks.

nyk4ever - the clutch gene can lie dormant for years before it appears in professional athletes.

The offensive explosion almost came out of nowhere. Entering the Knicks' three-game Texas trip, Shumpert was shooting 35.9 percent from the floor and 30 percent from beyond the arc. But he hit 13 of his 17 3-point attempts in Texas and shot 65 percent from the floor overall.

The question is whether will Shumpert's field goal improve as he learns how to play basketball?

I am not saying Shump is out of his hole because he still has a lot of climbing to do. I do, however, agree with Misterearl that it's not out of the question to go from being unclutch to clutch, overnight. We have seen Allan Houston do it in basketball, Eli do it for the Giants, Mark Sanchez for the Jets a few years ago and even A-Rod in 2009. This is something that can change for anyone. It's more so a skill to learn than a habit to change, IMO.

To your point Allanfan20, we were all witnesses to a basketball epiphany in Jeremy Lin. Why did Lin suddenly explode into celebrity after being a castaway?

Something clicked between his talent and the opportunity of being in the right place at the right time. After being cut a second time, Lin was close to giving up pro basketball. Linsanity would have never happened.

Jump to conclusion ALERT for the reading impaired: this is NOT a talent comparison between Iman Shumpert and Jeremy Lin.

I repeat... this is NOT a talent comparison between Iman Shumpert and Jeremy Lin.

This is about seizing a moment and having success. Once. Then a second and third time. In the last 5 minutes, when it matters most. Just like Lin's game winner in Toronto. After that, it was on like popcorn.

Where is the the intersection of opportunity, inspiration and the confidence of a winner?

As he learns how to play basketball, could Shumpert assume the position?

why does everything with you have to go this way.. can he just be a decent player that is having a good stretch.

Andre iguoadala has the most game winning shots, over the past few years and this year has the most buzzer beater wins in the league..

Does he have that rare clutch gene?

Do you ever let anything just play out?

At best shumpert may just be another good bench rotation guy, and in the end, that is ok.... we have seen the talk of paul george light, when i was saying lets just hope he can duplicate what lance stephenson did last year..

now he hits a tip in vs the spurs and hits a three up by 6 vs the mavs and we are talking "rare clutch genes"..

One thing is certain, JR Smith has the crazy gene. That is permanent. It never goes away. Without the external pressure to play him, JR would be a permanent resident of pine brother city, or released for conduct detrimental to the game of basketball.

My kingdom for a legit point guard.

We've seen flashes of this from Shump since he came into the league - the only difference now is he's put together three strong games in a row and keyed 2 victories in a Knick season short of them.

I thought Lavor Postell, Frank Williams and Michael Sweetney all showed flashes. Where are they now?

Let see him continue to do this before talking about some Clutch Gene. I thought Frank Williams had that same gene! At least he did, for three games!

The Answer Man Always Lets It Play Out, Until He Catches A Scent Of A Feel Good Story

Q. I thought Lavor Postell, Frank Williams and Michael Sweetney all showed flashes. Where are they now?

A. Trying to get a ticket with Rodman to North Korea.

franco12 - as impatient fans, is it any shock that we grab on to whatever hope seems to float?

The Mayor may not have had the clutch gene but he sure was fun to watch and he made some nice contributions on both ends of the court. When dunked in traffic it would wire the team up.

Gallo has the injury gene.

Trevor Ariza has the "rotation player on any squad" gene.

David Lee has the clutch gene. The game winning buzzer tap, facing away from the basket, was dope.

When giving the opportunity every player on the Knicks roster is above avg.

If you play with in the flow, there will be nights the ball finds you and your teammates find you. When you don't force the issue the game comes easy..

What made me smile the most last night was, Melo pass the ball to the right player at the right time and shump buried a wide open three..it was simple basketball and Melo trusted him.

I actually smiled the Houston game because Melo gave up a potential contested elbow jumper for a SHump coming off a curl.

TKF,

When Mister goes into answerman mode, read it as if he is smooth type "Barry White"voice trying to sell you a "velvety candy bar"......

Its a romantic notion for sure, but its how he sees it.

Bonnie see's it in numbers.

You see it as if Melo is the devil.

Jrod Sees you, and others then he holds up a mirror, tells you how you see it, then scolds and polices.

"Nalododian Somberbombastic Dolan Hatelove" is my view.

Itss all good. Mister was my muse for last years "the brotherhood of man". If you recall it was a story of Woodson taking in his stray orphan Melo and JR and teaching them to be men thru tough love. This year its "hide the bong from JR and give Melo what he wants so he stays!"

lmao... A guy who posts nothing but Melo hate for 3 years is calling you extreme? Good stuff.

I think it was more than something just clicking w/ Shumpert. I dont know who said what to him, but he's clicked. Who knows? I played hardball for 15+ years. The year I was getting divorced I couldnt hit. I struck out a ton and batted in the low 200s, and I usually batted around .350-.400

I never felt distracted, in fact I couldnt wait to get on the field and away from my personal crap. That being said I performed poorly. I was in shape. I was prepared. I was willing. It wasnt an effort issue. What did I learn? That mental focus goes beyond just telling yourself "get focused."

Who knows what was up with Shump. Maybe Woody said if he plays well he might get traded to a real team and these last 3 games was Shump's response

Postell was never good.. he was bench fodder. He had two games of chucking up shots when Spree or Houston were hurt and I think he scored 20 points twice and then played in the NBA again.

Frank and Sweetney are fair examples of players who could probably start in the league but simply could not stay in NBA basketball shape.
