it basically sets in stone keeping this team as a core together for 3 more years at a minimum
i said this on a post last week

thera re 25 teams well under the cap in 2015 assuming we pay melo 130 and his 2015 is 24mm

you add
melo 24mm
jr smith 6.4mm
felton 4.5mm
prigs 2mm
hardaway 1.3mm
Shumpert 3.8mm
7 capholds at 650=4.5mm
-------------------------
that means were at 45mm without 1 frontcourt player signed so we have about 15-17mm to spend for 7 positions and no FC players--who exactly would want to com here?

No one is doing the math you want the same team that is on pace to win 25 games WITHOUT 1 frontcourt player and everyone 2 years older?

Signing melo will guarantee mediocrity for a long time. If mills is a numbers guy, he trades melo or let him walk for nothing.

what is the mentality of letting him walk for nothing do?
Also i think the only reason why Mills is here is he is friends with Dolan and will accept a 7 figure salary to be compliant.

The likelihood of shumpert and Felton being on the roster is slim at that point. If Knicks follow thru with the 2015 plan, expect to only see Melo, hardaway, maybe smith and the 2015 draft pick on the roster.

Well they would have to cut Shumpert and Felton is not letting 4,5mm go by. Cutting Shump would save 3mm but it wont change anything. There are still 20+ teams with more cap space than us.

You let melo walk because he is an anchor in the wrong way. He takes up too much of the cap, and produces too few wins. You can get the same win production from a bunch of nbdl talent. This season is proof.

I agree that mills is likely a super yes man, and that yes men organizations are lovely to compete against but hard to root for.

I mean when you post this, it's crystal clear that this team needs to make the Gasol and Lowry trades....I mean we can't sit still and just ride this core group as is....I mean we can't go with this group....nothing more to say about it really

I dont think there is a Gasol trade. and even if we make a trade for any player--Lowry Gasol etc.. we have to resign them.

Bargs Chandler run out in 2 years--while we can say this or that about either player--production needs to be replaced. Anyone think Chandler is resigning for 3mm or Bargs for 3? If both cost us 13-14 together thats all out FA $ right there.

I'm holding out hope that he will resign for less if he can get some other players to agree to come like what the Heat did with their shady stunt. Knicks would never be lucky enough for something like that but I'll maintain hope.

Not happening. He forced us to trade all of our assets that wouldve KEPT us out of this position so he could get maximum money. The arsehole didnt even calculate he couldve just opted out after 3 anyway--he had to kil th e organization getting here for a few more dollars. He already asked for more--why would he take less now--he can get a little less and enjoy playing with Kobe and enjoy the LA lifestyle.

Melo have a choice either sign for less or don't complain when he has an half ass supporting cast to back him up. He must sign for 15 million. If he is out trying to get another superstar here he knows that he must take less money.

15mm? hes not doing it
would you opt out of 23.5 to take 15? No one would. He ALREADY chose to sack a supporting crew--Melo is about being paid. And if he is willing to give up a little--my bet is he does it in LA!!!!!!! Kobe looks pretty darn good still

Nor can he. There are limits up or down to what he can sign as an extension.

Here's the deal in my opinion. When the Knicks fired Grunwald everything changed. They had a plan and that is gone. They had sensibility and that is gone. They had a gm now they have an administrative team and a hands on owner. Until Dolan loses interest or invests in a high level gm, the team will be a dysfunctional mess. It won't matter whether or not they sign Melo. There is no sensibility in what and how things are being done. They need to put Woodson out of his misery and put Herb in to complete the dysfunctional over haul.

So we're just doomed until these guys retire? There's gotta be a way to right this ship. They aren't going to do it the way things are going now. To simply stay put and then resign them to match production? Man that sucks cuz it's not just production. The guys have no chemistry. They had it and lost it. I think that's the problem.

Question to Briggs: what do we do? Or what should the knicks do or what would you do?

I think this is a bit of a misconception. I don't think Grunwald was EVER really in charge. The day Dolan stepped over Walsh for Melo, this team was basically Dolan and his henchmen. They only had the appearance of having a real GM. This thing is all about Dolan. He has to OK any moves and he clearly will veto something for whatever reason he deems important. The Chris Smith thing is all Dolan IMO. It's got his signature all over it, if you think about the nepotism from the Marbury days, it's all the same kind of crap.
