I think it is needed at times, along with shorter contracts despite players wanting longer ones
When you give shorter contracts, in general, players will continue to work harder, find ways to develop/improve, and try it would lead to a better career but of course injury is the ultimate gamble
IE: See Spencer Hawes, JR Smith's first 2 years here, Bynum in Cleveland now, Sessions career, Jordan Hill,
While some players will continue to develop and work hard on their games, it is not true for majority of the players, and it is the TEAM that has to pay it with the CBA rules to suffers
Like Lebron, Durant, Westbrook, Paul George
Some ALL STAR caliber players, usually younger ones, you must pay them the max or near max, although someone like Harden has his final year HALF guaranteed which is still a lot if he happens to get a career ending injury, it would protect Houston
But Anthony at his age, simply is a disaster waiting to happen at his age, for a MAXish type contract at 5years 25-30m+, especially for his lack of BB IQ, and he is going to go down hill physically for a multipled effect
I think change is good for Rudy Gay and Derrick Williams, it does not mean they would have worked for us
Gay has the ability to be a better rebounder/defender, something he must concentrate on, as well as playing off the ball, I think they have enough players able to score, and a surprisingly quality ball handler as the last pick of the draft that can SCORE and facilitate, with Cousins that score in many different ways as the #1, including with jump shots to open up a lane for Rudy Gay to beat his man off the dribble 1v1, post up, or create double teams for shooters on the King's
Their versatility and ability to score at the SF,PF,C position in addition to the PG, SG's scoring/penetrating ability seem to fit perfect with Thomas, Mclemore (a more athletic Ray Allen without that DEADLY shooting yet, that will improve much in the next 2-3 years)
In the end, no system is going to work a ball dominant CA, with a lack of ball movement, lack of penetration/facilitating, and solid consistent post presence
Maybe Melo will realize this, especially if he leaves NY and signs with another team, so they don't have to give up a farm for him, so the next team can still sign talent around him that he needs, at the cost of NY's expense...
