![]() Was thinking about how we could possibly retool around Melo WITHOUT affecting our 2015 cap space and came up with these two moves:
This program doesn't take into account trade exemptions that teams' have but I did the math and it should theoretically work. They deal is designed to free up roster spots and get a crappy 2014 2nd round pick from Golden State. The Spurs have much more use for Pablo than we do, and I think there'd be legitimate interest there because of the Argentine connection with Manu, as well as the need for depth behind Tony Parker. They have similar depth issues at the 5, so I don't believe they'd have any qualms taking Cole Aldrich's contract. Meanwhile, Golden State needs a veteran at PG, which makes Beno worth the gamble.
The 2nd trade is designed to grab multiple expiring contracts (Andrew Bynum and Kris Humphries) to potentially swing more tangible deals for a disgruntled star, or better role players from a rebuilding team e.g. Aaron Afflalo, Jameer Nelson and Glen Davis (to be swapped for Brandon Bass) for our expirers and Iman. Presuming this happens, I hire Phil Jackson to coach home games (and mentor Woodson), while also giving him some front office job. I don't care for Jackson's antics but the fact that he gets ball hogs to trust their teammates (e.g. Kobe and MJ), could do a world of good for Melo and the team. With the shooters we'd have from ORL, I think that system would work exceptionally well here, even though we'd have to give it about a year.
