Edit: This doesn't even include whoever we could have drafted THIS season

Step 1: Lose, but build with yoots

2007: Wilson Chandler (#23)
2008: Gallo (#6)
2009: Jordan Hill (#8)
2010 pick: Gordon Hayward (Utah picked # 9 with the 1st round we traded to Phoenix for Starbury) Also avail: Paul George, Larry Sanders, Eric Bledsoe
2011: Shumpert # 17
2012: Royce White #16 Also avail: Tyler Zeller, Terrence Jones, Andrew Nicholson, Evan Fourniier, Tony Wroten. Miles Plumlee, Jeff Taylor

PG: Jeremy Lin $8 Mill
SG: Gordon Hayward $3.4 M
SF: Wilson Chandler $6.5M
PF: Jordan Hill $3.5M
C:

Bench: Royce White, Danilo Gallinari $10M

That's $30M total for the young bucks.

It's pretty conceivable that had we kept the young guys and rebuilt the draft picks could have been higher in some years.

2010 was a pretty deep draft with John Wall, Evan Turner, Derrick Favors, Boogie Cousins, Greg Monroe, Paul George, Larry Sanders

Yeah you lose with young players but they are CHEAP and you get to decide whether to keep them by offering them early long term extensions or by letting them go into restricted FA and matching an offer if other teams think they're valuable.

Step 2: Get a star, fill in gaps with veterans who fill needs and can LEAD

THEN once you have a young core, there's room to improve and FLEXIBILITY to fill in the roster with cheap veterans that fill holes in the roster and if you want to a big $ FA signing.

But again you can CHOOSE to sign a FA that fits.

So for example with this team you could choose to sign a legit starting PG if you think Lin can't cut it or you splurge $14 M on a Tyson Chandler.

PG: Jeremy Lin $8 Mill
SG: Gordon Hayward $3.4 M
SF: Wilson Chandler $6.5M
PF: Jordan Hill $3.5M
C: Tyson Chandler $14M

Bench: Royce White, Danilo Gallinari $10M

That's $44M for young bucks. You can still go out and get a better PG. If we got lucky and took Paul George over Hayward in 2010? With Gallo/Chandler maybe we take Miles Plumlee or Tyler Zeller instead of Royce White since we'd need a backup to Chandler.

PG: Jeremy Lin $8 Mill
SG: Paul George $18M
SF: Wilson Chandler $6.5M
PF: Jordan Hill $3.5M
C: Tyson Chandler $14M

Bench: Tyler Zeller or Plumlee, Danilo Gallinari $10M

That's $59M and you can trade either Gallo or Chandler. Personally I keep Chandler because Wilson Chandler + Paul George + Tyson Chandler would haunt the dreams of offenses.

WHAT THE F IS WRONG WITH BUILDING WITH YOOTS? WHAT?!!!

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please
