Lets face reality--if this continues and Melo see's there is no hope going 4 ward for several years--why wont he jump ship like D Howard? At 30 he's already made more money than he would ever need. He can go to the Lakers next year. Can this franchise afford to let him leave for no assets--since we gave up 5 years worth for him? I dont take his word that he'll stay--this will have to be a wait and see--but once were past the trade deadline--all bets are off.

i can see the frustration mounting with melo. especially since hes actually playing so hard. I wouldnt be surprised if he left either and to be honest i wouldnt be mad. i pick on melo but he "deserves" a title...or at least a legit run at it. he just needs to be a sidekick to a REAL elite player. For us, we would get rid of 23 mill off the cap...then another 40 mill the following yr to real build
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

I hope he leaves and we get nothing. I want to see this franchise hit rock bottom- as if ten years of being a joke wasn't enough- as that might be the only thing that wakes Dolan up.

And go to LA and do what? Figure out how to deal with the "Melo and Pau can't play together", while Kobe tries to resurrect the end of his career without good pins?

Melo wants to take less money to not be the man? You think Kobe is going play Wade to Melo's Lebron? I don't think so.

You may be right though, if he thinks going back West is the only way to get to the Finals in his lifetime.

Agreed. Doubtful that Dolan would sign off on a trade, but it would make sense to try and get some building blocks (picks or players) for him and be serious shoppers in 2016 FA. Too bad basketball minds don't run this organization.

It would be a tragedy if Melo walks

You may be right though, if he thinks going back West is the only way to get to the Finals in his lifetime.

Does anyone here think Melo would do what Lebron did, what Duncan and Parker did in SA? Does anyone think he will take less money for the chance to be on a winning club? If so, then I believe it when he says he wants to bring a title to NY. That may just be the decision he needs to make to get a title anywhere he goes.

It's the smart thing to do business wise to opt out, that's a no brainer. If he resigns, he should make sure everyone around him know he is going to take less money so the Knicks have a shot and can really rebuild. This will go a long way to open our eyes, the team's eyes, and MOST importantly, would open the eyes of any FA's coming here. It would truly become a place gunning for the chip and would do wonders for Melo's career in the short term and historically.

I'd rather trade him but I'm not gonna cry over Carmelo leaving us with $60 mil in cap space intact.

not only that, but we are not going to get back the same package we gave up.. I a team is willing or stupid enough to give us close to that, I would say do it tomorrow..

If Melo leave he leaves not a big deal. More cap space to get other players.

carmelo is a role player making max money.. who is a role player to you? it seems you don't have a clear grasp on who a star is... there are a lot of role players in the league who are allstar players or play on that level..

Let me ask you, was indiana a team of role players last year? and please don't mention paul george as being a star then, because only myself and a few others were calling him star talent last year...

you would not take the pacers team over having carmelo? really?

exactly, we could easily fill his slot with a player who plays both ends of the floor, get a rebounder and a PG and be a team much better built for the playoffs...

time to get rid of this relic.. his game is old, the league has passed that by...time to move on..

The Pacers are the one exception you like to use and its pretty warn out. George, West, and Hibbert are all-star players. They are not role players, and no reasonable basketball person considers Melo a role player.

Stephenson and Hill are the role players, and becoming more confident and efficient every day. Big 3 and great role players / bench cheerleaders is the recipe. Indiana doing that with 3 of their own draft picks in their starting lineup.

Problem is we are screwed if he leaves. We'll have a lot of cap space, but who do we build around? If we preserve cap space, we will have given away a sure lottery pick. What a mess. My preference in order from most to least is:

1) This team figures it out and makes a SMART move with Shumpert (I'm resigned to the fact he's as good as gone)
2) If the team struggles all year and gets bounced in the first round Melo still decides to stay and we build around him.
3) Trade Melo if he doesn't commit to staying and rebuild starting this coming off season. Hopefully we can get a lottery pick in return, but unless he opts in with the team he's traded to I don't think we'll be getting a lottery pick.
4) Melo walks, we have to rebuild, we learn another tough lesson by having given away an almost sure lottery pick in the original deal that brought him here.

I love what Indiana has done, they have set themselves up very well. Them and OKC did great rebuilding thru the draft. That being said, there are very few examples of this success in the league and neither team has won a title yet. But for whatever reason, some people seem to think if we never made the Melo trade we would look like Indy right now.

It is what it is at this point. Just keeping Melo at a max out deal will guarantee the Knicks go no where. At this point does it really matter between making playoffs to get bounced and rebuilding towards something that will last, and result in something that might be more special.

Stephenson and Hibbert were two guys that they waited awhile on to develop.

That development period does not exist on this team and it won't surprise me to see Shump putting it on the Knicks in the future in an opposing uni.

Chris Smith seems like a solid cheerleader/ice pack holder though.

you are missing the point.. none of those guys were "stars" not drafted as stars or even talked about as stars and you know it... Stephenson right now would be the best player on the knicks... This guy does a bit of every thing so well... and what about west? are you telling me the pacers have 3 stars... you guys take the word "role players' as something negative.. there are level of role players on a team..
