I heard from 2 sources that Fugazy is a reference to some dialog in "Donnie Brasco" It means to be a fake or a fraud. I saw Donnie Brasco just a couple of months ago and I don't remember hearing it, but then again I have the attention span of Peter Griffin.

Yeah, supposedly it's gangster (read: italian-american) slang. It's not just Donnie Brasco, it's been around more than few movies, tv shows and hip-hop albums. Like when you're trying to buy stolen diamonds and they turn out to be fake (don't you hate when that happens?) you say "you tryin' to pass me some fugazy stones, pizan?"
Like so much pseudo-italian mobster slang, invented for film by young jewish screen writers, blacks and the rest of hip-hop/urban culture have adopted it as their own.

Why must we all try to disect things so much? I espcially like this statement... "Like so much pseudo-italian mobster slang, invented for film by young jewish screen writers, blacks and the rest of hip-hop/urban culture have adopted it as their own." It kind of segregates who says the word "Fugazy".

I say we should just keep it simple and say he meant a fake thug, or fake badazz. What do u think?

Segregating who says the word? Almost all slang is culture specific (at least from its origination). In real life, I've only heard the word used by black kids.

Yeah, maybe I went a little overboard with the etymology. Exaggerated, maybe, but not incorrect. There's nothing wrong with analyzing how language diferentiates and defines us. The problem I think alot of people have is that they're afraid of what makes us different-- people have become so hypersensitive and scared to offend that they ignore the wonderful diversity that makes this county strong.

That's where the word comes from. Unless you know what a phrase means or could mean to someone when you use it, you run the risk of being misinterpreted.

You can say 'fake thug' or whatever. But it's not exactly accurate.

If u don't mind, please read what Tim Thomas said along with using the word Fugazy. Then u let me know what you think. Now if u only heard that word used among black kids then so be it, however, I do believe growing up I heard it from everyone. Whether it be Blacks (Jamiacans, Haitians, Americans), Jews, Hispanics (Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Columbians, Cubans, Dominicans), Italians. I guess it all depends on where u come from and who u decide to involve yourself with. Now as far as fake thug goes... that is more accurate than trying to "segregate" who says the word mostly. If u were to (re)read the article on Tim Thomas's comments you will agree yourself. I happened to mention what I said because I knew you were going a little too far in your analogy of it usage.

Also, could you please mention which hiphop album it has been on please. I would like to hear how they spoke of it in their lyrics.

Yeah, maybe you're right. I just don't think Tim was using it right. No matter where he grew up, a thirty-year-old millionaire is definitely not the first person I'd ask about current street slang.

And I think you can catch it on one of those Wu-derivitive albums (Killarmy/Killa Priest/Cappadonna... on of those).

That is very understandable and I agree. Hey maybe you shoul;d start a poll of what others think it means. It'll be interesting to see others point of views. I think Shandon Anderson's offense is Fugazy!. LOL
