On the eve of the regular-season opener, TNT's popular "Inside the NBA" analysts visited New York Monday and offered several pieces of pointed advice for the city's most prominent basketball citizen.

Read further at your own risk, Carmelo Anthony.

It began with Shaquille O'Neal suggesting the Knicks star "stop being satisfied with being mentioned after LeBron [James]. Him and LeBron are similar players, in my opinion. They're both strong, they're both physical, but it seems to me at times that he's satisfied with being mentioned behind LeBron."

Speaking at a luncheon to promote the new season -- and the show's visit to Flatiron Plaza in Manhattan Tuesday night -- O'Neal added, "If Carmelo wants to get past Miami, he needs to do more."

Then Kenny Smith chimed in by saying that though he "loves" Anthony and his game, he needs to evolve into the sort of star other players want to play with.

"That is what's missing, I think, from the Knicks and I think what's missing from Carmelo," Smith said. "It's the law of attraction. There aren't a lot of guys saying they want to come to New York and play here with this guy."

So, Charles Barkley, how might Anthony become the sort of player who attracts others? "Play a little defense and get a rebound every now and then," he said. "Pass the ball."

Later, he added that though he considers Anthony "the best offensive player in the NBA," that is not enough. "Guys don't want to play with a guy who doesn't pass the ball," he said.

For me, the Knicks being this big attraction for players is overblown with or without Melo. You can say no one wants to come play with him but not many stars wanted to come here without him either. It took us giving Amare a contract no one else would have to get something out of that 2010 free agency.

Charles further said:

After Carmelo Anthony forced his way to New York, Charles Barkley said he thinks he should be committed to staying in the Big Apple.
“When I heard that [Anthony said he would test free agency], I was very disappointed because he wanted to come here,” Barkley said Monday at a media event for “Inside The NBA” in Midtown. He appeared alongside fellow TNT analysts Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal.
“Now, all of a sudden, he wants to leave, he wants to test free agency. That really [ticked] me off, to be honest with you. He owns the city. He should be trying to get guys to come here and not [be] like, ‘I’ll stay here for a couple years.
‘I forced my way here, number one. … I got here [and] now I want to leave.’ That’s just not cool at all, to be honest with you.”
It makes financial sense for Anthony to opt out of the final year of his deal even if he wants to stay in New York because if he signs an extension with the Knicks, he could agree only to a three-year deal, while if he opts out and re-signs with the Knicks, he can sign a five-year deal.
Still, Smith said Anthony should have clarified that was his plan, as opposed to leaving open the possibility he could choose to go to Los Angeles or somewhere else in free agency next summer.
“What he should say is, ‘[the Knicks are] going to give me the max, [and] I’m going to be in New York,’ ” Smith said. “The Knicks cannot not give him the max.”
Not to be left out, O’Neal had his own criticism for Anthony. But rather than focus on his announced intent to opt out of his deal, the future Hall of Fame center instead said Anthony shouldn’t settle for being considered somewhere behind LeBron James in the NBA’s pecking order.
“I need to see from Carmelo … to me, [he] needs to stop being satisfied with being mentioned after LeBron,” O’Neal said.
At one point, according to TNT’s Rachel Nichols, O’Neal was interrupted in comparing Anthony with James, as Barkley, who apparently sees no similarities, interjected, “Well, they’re both black.”
In addition to his criticisms of Anthony, Barkley was also down on the Knicks as a whole, seeing the potential for things to go south quickly if they get off to a slow start.
All three men, on the other hand, were much more complimentary of the Nets’ offseason, with all giving the Nets a chance to contend for an Eastern Conference title.
“I think if Brooklyn stays healthy, Brooklyn can give [the Heat] a run for their money,” O’Neal said. “I like their starting five. It’s a very, very impressive starting five. … They got a great team.
“I really think if Brooklyn can come together, and come together quickly, they can take Miami.”
Both Smith and Barkley agreed, saying the Nets have the one thing — quality size — that gives Miami fits.
“The one thing that Miami has trouble with is size and mobility, and the Nets have big guys who are mobile with size,” Smith said.
“It all depends on their health and [coach] Jason Kidd,” Barkley said. “They’ve got to make it mesh, but Brooklyn is going for it.”

melo is doing this to pump up the volume in his head. it's better to test the water, have teams bidding on you and rolling out red carpets, than to resign without the trumpets. the process will boost his ego and he will come in, drop buckets and take names like they are the women.

It's more than passing the ball. He's just not a winning basketball player. He's proven that. He is who is he. There's no reason to hate Melo... just accept this team will NEVER win a championship with him as their best player.

Dear Melo;
Kindly step on the court, let your game do the talking, keep your labrum from being further injured, and get those prissy f's to shut up. Thank you.

I agree. Melo is a great player and probably the best that we will see in the next 10 years or more. But thats not what the haters want. They want a player to play a certain way, their way and Melo does not play the way they want him to play. They will tell half truths about Melo's stats. And one of them I call The Sean Hanity of basketball against the Knicks.

Ahh, the annual state of the Knicks address from Barkley...Good constructive criticism from Shaq and Kenny...Chuck still riding the Nets, huh, even after last year's disappointment...Boston looked ancient last year, lets see what Geritol can do..I hope Melo is listening...

While I agree with what they are saying they are not the most credible sources. Shaq is not an analyst, he is an entertainer, same with Barkley, they make people laugh, not come up with earth-shattering insights. Only one that consistently raises valid points is Kenny. It's funny how one quote from a clown like Barkley agreeing with them can send some into pure ecstasy...like your whole life has new meaning now or something.

Melo will always be a 2nd tier star. He's not a guy that leads you to titles. That's not a knock on him. It's just who he is. He's not a leader or a playmaker. He needs to play with a bigger star than him so he can be the 2nd option, not the first.

only winning shuts people up.

Knicks are a totally retarded franchise. They won the most games in what? 10 years? And in the offseason fire the GM and the player they sold the farm to get cant wait to test free agency and they rehire a guy who was such an epic failure its laughable.

Any mud anyone wants to sling at the Knicks is 100% justified.

When you follow a team run by Dolan this is par for the course. Straight shot! What a little toad for an owner we have

I must admit at times I catch myself speaking to the TV saying "Melo pass the ball", but he never had to pass wherever he's been. His college coach and 1st pro coach gave him the green light to think this way.

He must play along side a player that's a star like himself so that he can follow a lead.

Jason Kidd after running his SUV into a tree got the team starting off THE RIGHT WAY , but it didn't last.

This is why I loved the signing of Prigioni, he wanted to play the right way, but was just a rookie himself last yr under Woodson. We know how Woody treats freshmen , (I mean rookies).

Hardaway Jr will he break the mold of Red Holzman, I mean Mike Woodson ?

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.
