Marc Stein added a small nugget at the end of his report on the Marcin Gortat trade, saying that there is a growing expectation around the league that GM Ryan McDonough will try to move Goran Dragic in a similar type of trade for more assets.
Whoa Nellie. Actually, the name Nellie is applicable since the Suns are expected to run like Don Nelson's Warriors teams, and any trade of Dragic somewhere else would probably be a bad thing for his value. This seems a bit like a throwaway line to us, but if you want to hedge against that risk bumping him down a half-round might not be a bad idea.Dragic is rumored to be available for the right price, similar to what Gortat was traded for
Unfortunately we don't have expiring contracts
It looks like they want to follow OKC's model of building a team but with much more future draft picks, but currently without the talent level of Durant, Westbrook, or Harden
The only players that Suns would probably have interest in are Iman Shumpert and JR Smith, but only JR Smith would really come close to the salary of Dragic
I would like to keep Smith but with Iman, Tim Hardway JR, I realize all 3 are unlikely to be part of our future, especially with 2015 FA when Iman is also eligible for an extension
If we don't extend him, another team will likely offer a contract to him, possibly a poison pill similar to Lin/Fields, especially if Melo opts out this summer and gets an overpaid deal that limits our financial abilities
JR Smith and Pablo would add up to get Dragic, while we would have a PG for our future to build with at a reasonable salary at 7m per year
Thoughts anyone?
With JR, I wouldn't give up a 1st rounder by overpaying for Dragic but that would likely be the Knick's style of trading and I am sure Sun's would insist on it for taking Pablo's contract, especially with NYK
Felton, Pablo, and a vet min player *not a rookie*, might also do it (salary wise), but would def require a 1st rounder
Possible legit scenarios that add up financially
======================================================
1- JR Smith and Pablo (2020 2nd rounder for taking Pablo's contract LOL)
2- Felton, Pablo, vet min player that is not a rookie, and a 2018/2020 1st rounder?
3- Felton, Iman, and Pablo
we still have Brewer's expiring to throw around but cannot be used to combine for players in a trade, however, it will expire by the deadline and will likely require a future pick to get any player of any value/production, some other players I would have interest in are Greveis Vasquez and Isiah Thomas, both on the King's
