Carmelo Anthony can become a free agent after the upcoming season, but he gave the strongest indication yet that his plan is to re-sign with the Knicks.

"I'm not going nowhere," Anthony said during an interview Tuesday with Bloomberg Television's "Market Markers."

Anthony is due to make $23.3 million in the 2014-15 season. If he were to opt out, the Lakers likely would pursue him, but the Knicks can offer him significantly more. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the most the Lakers could offer is four years and roughly $96 million. Anthony could get a maximum five-year contract worth about $129 million from the Knicks, who can start negotiating with him in February.

Money aside, Anthony pushed for the February 2011 trade from Denver to be in the spotlight and try to help the Knicks win their first championship since 1973. He led them to 54 wins last season and their first Atlantic Division title in 19 years, but they lost to Indiana in the second round.

Anthony, 29, remains hungry to carry the Knicks to a title.

"That is one of the reasons why I wanted to come here to New York, just so I could take on those pressures and those challenges,'' Anthony said. "A lot of people do not like to deal with the pressure. A lot of people do not know how to deal with the challenges they face. To me, it is everyday life.''

But Anthony doesn't want his future or free agency to be an everyday discussion. He told The Associated Press at a Sept. 11 charity event Wednesday that he would not address either issue during the season. "I'm just not going to do it,'' he said. "I'm going to let everybody know the first day that I'm not going to talk about it.''

The Knicks were the No. 2 seed in the East last season behind eventual NBA champion Miami, but they lost leaders Jason Kidd and Rasheed Wallace. Their big offseason pickups were Andrea Bargnani, Metta World Peace and Beno Udrih.

The Knicks could take a step backward, especially with the Nets, Bulls and Pacers improved, but Anthony doesn't think so.

"I actually see this team being better than last year,'' he said Tuesday at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit. "That's just my opinion, that's the way that we feel. And if we feel that way as a unit, then there's nothing that can come between us.''

Notes & quotes: The Knicks signed guards Toure' Murry and Chris Smith (J.R.'s brother) to non-guaranteed deals. They want to add another big man because Jeremy Tyler is out 8-10 weeks after foot surgery last week.

The Dolan family owns controlling interest in the Knicks, Madison Square Garden and Cablevision. Cablevision owns Newsday.

I'm glad Melo isn't going to talk about his contract during the season. Like the positive attitude. We'll see how things shake out next season.

Obviously not going nowhere would mean he could go somewhere.
Keep hope alive Sombers!

129 million. yowza. Cant wait to read the comments on that type of change for anyone not named LeQ or KD.

$129mil will determine how serious Melo is about winning a ring. I'd like to think he would leave money on the table after seeing what the previous 5yrs of salary cap hell is like. Maybe he likes playing with the James Flight Whites of the world. Who knows. We shall see.

Also is Melo more positive this year than last when he said last yr was the beat team he ever played on and that didn't care of leading the league in scoring?

Ahh gotta love the offseason

Well when your coach's entire gameplan is to let you do work, you're going to score a lot of points. I don't think melo was lying last offseason, things just have a way of deferring to him with this team. That being said, with all the offensive weapons in the team this year he has no excuse to call his own mumber as much as he did last year. JR, Amare, Bargnani, Udrih, Shumpert, Felton, and even Hardaway Jr can all score the ball. With so many offensive players he has an abundance of options. In particular, I really hope he cuts out those dumb threes where he doesn't even set himself and just fires one off from 30 ft in transition. They kill possessions and he misses them a lot more than he makes them.

Knicks shouldn't pay that kind of money to a below 50% shooter.

Would like to se him avg 5 ast, I agree though he gets the ball weather he wants it or not, and what do you expect when your probably the best scorer on the planet..

I'm not saying Melo is as good as Kobe Bryant but there are players worth the money that shoot below 50 percent

I hope the Knicks would offer Melo something like $110 mil over 5 and try to negotiate

To brign Kobe up again, the LAkers plan A is to pair Kobe with Melo. On Mike and Mike in the Morning, they say that Melo and LBJ would be arguably the greatest tandem the league has ever seen. Think about that for a second. Melo has to do more, but he also needs some of the right pieces. I know the trade set that process back a little, but all I know is the roster keeps (marginally) improving around him.

for me the offer should be tied to how his salary fits into the whole team's salary structure, including other FA players in 2015. If he starts out at say ~$15M with max increases and Knicks able to snag another max candidate or so, I'm all for it. If the offer starts at $20M and all we can do is sign someone not on roster for $7M, then what's the point?

Oh boy, is this going to open up a can of worms or what?

as of right now, carmelo's figures are as follows:

12+ years in the NBA entitled to 35% of the cap. which means he is either going to make 21mil or he is getting an extension and the 2015 salary will be 25 mil...

All of that 2015 cap space

The new structure the NBA is looking for is you have ONE maybe 2 high salary players, one player in the 8-12 mil range like Bargs and the rest are all gonna be relatively low contracts. The days of mediocre players with Mid Level Max contracts are over. The way the Knicks have picked up really cheap young guys is going to be the way they go in the future. I think the Knicks believe they can get by with Melo surrounded by some shooters and rebounder/defenders. They haven't been able to really build the team with improved rebounding but I think they do want to. Looking at kids like Tyler who have scoring but also natural rebounding and a high motor. CJ Leslie has less of a motor but has some upside with his athletic ability.

Love Melo on the Knicks, but if he's going to get near "Kobe Bryant" type money annually for his next contract, we're phucking doomed...

Can't build a contender with a 30 yr old+ eating most of the cap. Been through it before with Allan Houston and Amare...

You think some people hate Melo now. Wait until he signs for Mobe money. The level of hatred will be on par with Arod

i THINK that is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard. but the again, it's mike and mike.. so go figure..

considering Jordan and pippen, Magic and Kareem, and even Lebron and Wade, those comments are of the odd variety... a lot of sensationalism.....

but all I know is the roster keeps (marginally) improving around him.

marginal improvements does not win rings... not when you are not close to winning in the first place..

I've grown to like Melo, but not at the max contract he'll be entitled to- clogs up to much space under the cba, plus I don't think he'll age well enough to justify the figure at the age of 35.

Not even. Lebron needed 2 top 10 players and great role players to be legitimate contenders. Although he took his Cleveland team to the finals only to get swept, I wouldn't call that team a legit contender.

Durant needed Westbrook and Harden to even get swept in the Finals, so no to him as well.
