Not sure I'd notice. Alternative is the one with sleeves.

Asked McKayla.......Not impressed.

kind of agree with her. Don't hate it, don't love it. I know the Pelicans were "bland" but to me if you can't make a good statement with a new look, then go traditional. Suns new look is not bad, Im just not sure it really stands out.

The Hawk......

Thunder Dan and Round Mound.......

recent generation........

While most of us have been raised to see through the truism that clothes make the man, listening to the team behind the Suns’ new look might make you rethink that.

For more than two years, a team of tastemakers from the NBA, the Suns, adidas and Phoenix-based Fisher design firm worked on the three new uniforms — all with more minimalist designs and more high-tech fabrics, and one with sleeves — unveiled Thursday night at a press conference at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

“I liked that it was still vintage a little bit but modernized,” said Jamie Thomasion, 19, of Mesa. “I liked the sleeves; it’s different and they have so much detail, the logo on the sleeve and the sun on the shorts like the old uniforms. My favorite uniforms are the original ones, so I was happy to see them return to a more vintage style.”

Sean Anderson, 31, of Mesa, said the new uniforms look great, but seeing former players model all the looks was the best part of the night.

Asked about the sleeves, Anderson said, “As long as the players feel comfortable wearing them and they like them, I can get used to it.

“Maybe it will be something that brings older fans into the uniforms.”

For the fourth time since the team’s founding in 1968, the Suns have a new look to go with their revamped roster and refreshed set of logos, this time with aesthetic choices highlighting the team’s uptempo style of play, their historically bold color palette and the sun image and its associations, according to team president Jason Rowley.

“We wanted to update the look, modernize the look, but also tie it back to the past and the legacy of the team,” Rowley said. “We’ve got a lot of good, young players who are going to be the future of this team. It’s a new era and no better way to launch a new era than with new jerseys.”

The new look is called “Speed of Light,” moving focus away from the “Phoenix” element of the team’s identity and refocusing it on the actual sun, according to Leon Imas, creative director of content and identity at adidas.

“It’s hot in Phoenix, so much so that the sun is like another citizen in the city’s culture,” Imas said.

Gone is the color-blocking, oversized graphics and blocky text. Instead, the uniforms are essentially monotone, with a nod to the Charles Barkley-era speeding sun concept, and a stylized return to the Dick Van Arsdale-era sun on the bottom outside of the shorts, although not nearly as short.

The designs are filled with “discovery points,” or little details that help tell the Suns’ story, Imas said.

The nine speed rays coming off the numbers symbolize the nine former players in the team’s Ring of Honor, the Phoenix-basketball logo is now on the waistband of the purple shorts and the sleeve of the orange uniform, and the gradient colors in the word “Suns” symbolize the rising and setting sun.

And come January, the Friday home-game orange uniforms will have sleeves, like the ones the Golden State Warriors debuted in February. The team will wear white tank-style uniforms at home and purple on the road.

When the league was founded in 1946, uniforms had sleeves, but fabrics then didn’t allow for great range of motion. These new sleeves are sewn in two parts, with a super-stretch fabric around the armhole that allows for natural range of motion while still covering up most of the bicep.

Players practiced in them this summer and provided feedback, according to Christopher P. Arena, vice president of identity, outfitting and equipment for the NBA Global Merchandising Group.

The Suns have been considered innovative in the NBA’s uniform world, with bold shapes in the early ’90s, color-blocking in the 2000s and now with sleek lines in this incarnation, Arena said.

“Sleeves have a long history in basketball, and a lot of guys workout in sleeve or even long sleeves, and people grow up playing in sleeves,” Arena said.

Imas added that high school, college and younger NBA players often prefer to wear T-shirts under their tank-style jerseys and this look combines those two elements for better performance.

Rowley said he hopes it will be older fans and women stocking up on the sleeved jerseys.

“There’s not any doubt that a sleeved jersey will have a broad sales appeal,” he said, “to somebody who potentially wouldn’t wear a tank top or who wouldn’t want to wear a T-shirt under a tank top. And women might be more interested in wearing a the sleeved jersey.”

As for the likely sartorial success of the new sleeved looks, Nic Screws, senior fashion market editor at Esquire, said that while possibly no man older than college age should wear a jersey, one with sleeves is more forgiving than a traditional tank-style top.

“Jerseys aren’t the chicest way to show your team spirit,” Screws said. “And tank tops are one of the trickiest pieces of clothing for a man to pull off, especially ... for the guys who don’t have the bodies of the professional athletes.”

But for those who love wearing jerseys, the T-shirt shape is a good choice, she said. And for women, it’s a no-brainer.

“This might entice women to wear jerseys,” she said. “Women are a lot more self-conscious about their arms. Traditional jerseys have longer arm holes and its just not a very flattering area on women that they would want to highlight. The little sleeve is nice; it covers that up.”

Agreed, kind of bland, but I like them well enough. A vanilla throwback to the 90's jerseys.
Still not a fan of the sleeved jerseys. Don't understand the marketing point that more people will buy a shirt with sleeves when they already sell player t's.

they should let the players decide whether to wear the sleeves or not.....it should be a personal comfort thing from player to player....

cuz if Melo says he prefers the tank top traditional jersey for his shooting touch then he should be able to choose. The short sleeves should be mandatory for guys Tyson since he never shoots and needs to keep his frail body warm to protect from toxic shock syndrome or whatever mangina problems he has.

I like the Barkley/KJ/Majerle era ones the best. Those look like summer league jerseys

Ugly as hell. Where do people come up with these uniform designs?

Purple one's okayish, but only because it's an inferior knock off of their classic 80s/90s jersey. Those orange sleeved things are horrific...

JIm thinking this new look with a big "SUNS" on it will be ok because MAYBE the league is going euro and allowing sponserships on the uniforms, and if less detailed with a bigger logo it might be a better look overall. The plain uniform with big logo leaves room for the places to put graphics. ON uniforms with those large side panels would crowd the logo.

Is this the reason for newer looking "less is more"? Im just taking a stab at it.

When the Grizzlies moved to Memphis they wanted to change the name to "Express".....as in Federal Express!!! It was seen as a sponsership and not permitted.

Yuck. That's a downgrade. The most recent incarnations of the Suns uniforms looked nice. This does not.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
