Knicks Looking To Own/Operate Their Own D-League Team?

Written by Keith Schlosser on 26 July 2013.

In their most recent proposal to take control of Nassau Coliseum, the Madison Square Garden Company suggests that in hopes of bringing higher level competition to Long Island, it's possible that a Knicks' affiliated NBA D-League team could potentially play there.

Such a proposal is merely a suggestion, which potentially leads to any amount of speculation in a variety of different directions. Still, the suggestion of a Knicks' D-League affiliate playing in Nassau County is an interesting concept.

That's because, at this time, the Knicks do not have a minor league franchise they can move and/or relocate.

New York is currently entered into what's considered a hybrid affiliation with the Erie BayHawks. Though they are the only NBA team to be paired up with the BayHawks, the fact of the matter is the Knicks do not own the minor league organization.

According to the hybrid affiliate agreement, executives from the Knicks' organization run basketball operations in Erie, but still allow more local officials to maintain ownership while handling business operations and community relations.

Thus, in order to bring an NBA D-League squad to Long Island, the Knicks would need to either purchase the BayHawks or one of the three remaining multi-NBA team affiliate (or acquire the rights to a since defunct) NBADL organizations.

Such a trend is becoming an increasingly common one as of late, though New York appears confident and comfortable in their arrangement with the BayHawks and Erie's staff.

Nevertheless, the fact of the matter is in order to bring an NBA D-League team to a closer location like Nassau Coliseum, things would need to change. It'll be interesting to see if the Knicks go in such a direction.

Thanks to @NetsDaily for the finger point to the link above.

I would like to see the ability of teams to "own" players on the team. It is crazy that you have a team and if you didn't draft a guy any other team can just sign him. What incentive is there to scour the talent?

Just give the players contracts that benefit both the players and the teams. I imagine something like the MLB minor league system would have some ideas to follow or build on...

I agree. A friend of mine suggested allowing rosters to be expanded to 30 players so that you could field a d league affiliate team. Only being able to have two guys in the dleague at a time for each team doesn't seem like a good way to maximize the league for the nba. Also, the quality of play would probably improve and fan interest would increase.

May be a start of backup planning if MSG will be forced out of the Pen Station roof.

I remember them talking about putting a dleague team in Harlem. That would be dope too.

The nba needs to take care of American basketball. They are too busy going overseas improving their basketball but refuse to step up and develop the our own talent

30 is way too many players. Right now teams can have 13 active players with 2 inactive ... the # of inactive players allowed could be increased to 5. This way you can have a full starting 5 in your D-league team.

I'm taking about the nba...they are quick to send players out I'm the world for basketball without boarders but what about setting up camp here in the states and improving the American players?

He gave them to Marbury before they broke up.

MSG owns Nassau coliseum if I'm not mistaken. Or they have a say in how they renovate it. I saw a special they did on it. There were like 3 different designs for a new design. I believe Dolan and MSG had one of those designs...

No links, this is off the top of my head.

How many Div 1 schools have basketball and Dleague opportunities more do we need? How can NBA develop more in the U.S.?

Nba needs to be more prominent in its home country. There is a reason guys get to the nba and lack basic fundementals. The aau circuit is ruining basketball. Not enough kids out there are being coached properly. The USA basketball team is now looked a program where they are looking to build a culture and have some kind of the familiarity other countries developed over the last 20 years. The nba needs to go deeper than that and offer the same camps and appearances here in the states. Have a team of superstars tour their own country promoting their own game. There are teams touring china, Argentina, Europe right now. I'd like to see them have more of a firm presence here.
