Knicks' Training Camp Roster Already Taking Shape?

Written by Keith Schlosser on 20 July 2013.

Though it's only mid-July, the Knicks' training camp roster appears to already be taking shape.

New York has a bevy of different roster spots to fill. After watching the Knicks (actually) struggle to take down the Celtics and then fall flat against the Pacers this past postseason, it's clear an injection of youth is necessary.

Given their tight cap situation and limited draft selections, it would make sense that the Knicks will turn to their Las Vegas Summer League roster for a few potential contributions.

KnicksJournal.com has learned through various sources that as many as four members (not including Iman Shumpert & Tim Hardaway Jr.) of the Knicks' Summer League team will be donning orange and blue once again this coming fall.

It'll be interesting to see if all of New York's training camp invites come from the Summer League roster. At this point, it would appear somewhat likely. Among the players KnicksJournal.com has learned will be in camp with the Knicks, Tony Mitchell is still yet to be one of those confirmed.

The high-flying swingman not only won the NBA D-League Slam Dunk Contest, but also the NBADL Rookie of the Year this past season with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants this past year. The scrappy forward's shot may need work, but he's the type of player who can flash his way to the basket with ease.

After a quiet week, Mitchell broke out during the Knicks' 90-81 victory over the Clippers on Friday. The freakish athlete finally put such abilities on display, throwing a couple of electrifying slams down while running the floor pretty well.

As noted, KnicksJournal.com has learned that New York has committed to up to four players for training camp this coming fall, but Mitchell would undoubtedly be a worthwhile fifth invitee as well.

Wonder if AJ Matthews still getting a training camp invite, he doesn't look like he is ready to be in the NBA as he needs to fill out his body/work out a lot on his game before he is able to possibly play in the NBA

He is a player that we probably should keep on our D League and monitor for 2years or so, as he still has potential but just isn't quite there yet

I think Murry and Tyler have been very impressive and at the least has earned their training camp invites, which they already have
I could see both players making the team *however Tyler will not get any PT and should train with the Bayhawk's and work in the gym for at least 1/3 of the early season*,
while with Murry, he can likely contribute right away because of his size and defense *which we all know Woodson loves first in addition to JR's injury/health/NBA game shape*, with the ability to play 2 positions
However, Tyler's "potential" is the highest among our summer league roster

I didn't see enough from Mitchell to really see him in the NBA. I saw more from Brownlee and I don't even think he's that good. Tyler, Murry, Jennings and even Vargas, seem to have NBA level skills and talent. I'd give McMorrow an invite on size alone. Dude can be useful in games against guys like Hibbert. McMorrow won't shine in a SL game with everyone flying around and no real post up 7'ers. However, in the NBA he'd be more useful than he looked in SL.
