As an organization that plays on Broadway, in a billion dollar building, with a mega cablecompany its apparent the team can't really rebuild as some cities whose NBA franchis is the only game in town. Teams like SAS, SAC, OKC, Indy, and to a lessor extent GSW and Milwaukee have either little or no competition in the winter sports.

While Indy and Milwaukee (green bay) have NFL teams, they like the others mentioned don't have three NHL teams and a second NBA franchise, as well as two MLB teams all competing for the same $! Some of those cities have great fan base and enthusiastic support. GSW has great fans for franchise that has been so beaten down for years. OKC is like a college game!

Tanking and rebuilding is just not really an option in NY.

I ask, do the knicks really have championship aspirations?

Can this franchise, and perhaps the Lakers as well in the new CBA really get to that level without some form of rebuilding?

Can winning a championship and making money CONSISTANTLY too much for the modern NBA franchise to accomplish both?

The Knicks were god awful for over a decade without rebuilding. They did give it a partial chance with Donnie Walsh--he set up the cap space and some of the lottery picks. In two years well have full cap space again--they just have to cool it giving away picks. If Carmelo ends up getting more than 20mm per--than you have an answer.

Of course Melo is going to get $20mil+ he didn't take a play cut in 2011 why would be take one now. His IQ isn't quite on par with lebron and wade

Its the problem of having an individual owner who in many cases is passionate about the game, and a corporation who is passionate only about the bottom line. As long as the money keeps rolling in, they're happy.

Cube had a distaste for losing money and when he went all in he got the Mav's over the top. HE was able to be competitive for a long time.

He dismantled the team maybe a year too soon but he wanted caps space. He offered Tyson a sweet one year contract but he got the long term money from Knicks. My point is he is passionate but he keeps cap space open but has no landed a big fish yet.

Miami tanked hard the two years before Lebron signed on.

Briggs, brings up a good point:

Are melo fans really knick fans first and foremost?

I have read some comments over the years that does leave me convinced that there are some real good Melo fans out there who love him and perhaps the team second.

I am a knick fan first and Melo is likealbe fun to watch player but I go back over many years and root for the team, not the players.

Its why I can't divorce myself from the team!

But these are individual owners who put their passion for their team before their need to make money, they got into it for different reasons than say Cablevision did. They wanted a ring.

I'm not saying that all corporations behave this way but more often than not they do these days. ITT did a better job of staying out of the way and letting Knicks mgmt run the team than Dolan has with Cablevision.

+1

The Walsh hiring set this franchise up to fail. Everything Donnie touched as a Knicks exec turned to shyt.

God, Donnie Walsh screwed the Knicks hard! His old ass was always a Pacer at heart, looking to phuck us over...

Grunwald had some hits and misses, but we've become the red-headed step child of free agency with no cap space because of a $20 million sinkhole we can't get rid of, amnesty, or play because his vagine might tear...
