BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics have hired Butler's Brad Stevens as head coach.

The team and the university made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Stevens has spent the last six years as the head coach of Butler, twice leading the Bulldogs to the NCAA championship game.

Stevens replaces Doc Rivers, who was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Stevens, who led Butler to two consecutive appearances in the NCAA championship game, had extended his contract with the Bulldogs through 2021-22.

"Our family is thrilled for the opportunity given to us by the leadership of the Boston Celtics, but it is emotional to leave a place that we have called home for the past 13 years," Stevens said.

Stevens led the Bulldogs to a 166-49 record, including a 12-5 record in the NCAA tournament. Stevens also earn four conference regular season championships, three league tournament titles and six trips to postseason tournament play. His 166 wins is the most for any NCAA Division I basketball coach over the first six years to start a career.

Butler is set to enter its first year as a member of the reconfigured Big East.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Personally, it's not a bad hire, since the Celtics aren't competing for a title anytime soon.

Good luck coaching that headcase Rondo, Brad!

Very very very easily, I can see that. Either way, they'll only have to put up with each other a couple seasons tops, before Rondo enters free agency in 2015.

If someone makes a good offer the Celtics will trade him. Not sure if they will get what they want right now might have to wait till the deadline

im devastated.. as a huge fan of the Big East in general, it was imperative for the success and legitimacy of the new conference to have brad stevens at the helm of butler. this is an absolute double killer for me. not only does the Big East lose an amazing coach, he ends up going to the celtics

Its clear that Boston is more invested in Stevens than Rondo or they would have tried to get a high profile, veteran, NBA coach to placate him. I believe Rondo likes the idea of being the man in Boston now that Rivers, Garnett, and Pierce are gone, but we'll see what happens when the losses start to pile up.

Its about him being a good coach and giving him time with a long term contract to let him develop into an even better pro coach.

Its a very foreign concept to most of the NBA, especially in NY.

Celts are rebuilding and doing it with a young handsome coach that they think can grow a culture with draft picks, free agents and im sure some trades. The losing will happen but they can sell it with this kind of commitment. They got plenty of history to fall back on with a devout fan base.

ITs a good move. Rondo is tradable at the right price. All players are!

One thing about this great coach from Butler, the young kids coming to his program at Butler HAD to respect him because of what he accomplished on the college level so they bought in totally.

The NBA is somewhat different, where you have to prove yourself on the NBA level to get respect , ask Rick Pitino. I think he's just a stop gap coach to help them thru their mediocre years.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

If you want to crown Stevens then crown him. Not me though I remember people said the same thing when they hired Rick Patino!

Didn't know there was another huge Big East guy on the board besides myself. Losing Steven from the Butler program will drop that program back to the depths of mid-major. With that said, the Big East is virtually on life support with Uconn and Syracuse no longer in the conference. There is no Big east with out those 2 teams, so with that, I'm not as emotionally invested in CBB as I used to be. The thought of Uconn and Syracuse no longer in the Big east makes me sick to my stomach...

To me he was the best coaching prospect in the nation. Very much wanted him to be coach a few years ago. I think the Celtics made a great hire.

The guy never coached a Mcdonalds ALL-AMERICAN, let alone and NBA Star. How will he deal with guys in their contract yr or players who has an ego. So much he doesn't understand about the pro game. Calipari, Carlisemo, Pitino. Need I say more ?

I believe the difference between them and Stevens is that he doesn't seem to have the ego that those others coaches have. Pitino did a good job coaching the Knicks his last time around, got us to the top of the Atlantic for the first time in decades. I believe part of his problem was that he was also Boston's GM and CEO, too many hats.

Carelsimo was a decent coach but he learned the hard way with Spree, that you can't bring that tough college approach to the NBA. I think he learned from his mistakes. Didn't do a bad job with the Nets and I don't believe Pops would have hired him as an assistant with the Spurs if he wasn't a good coach.

Calipari had some success (made the playoffs once) but the roster might have had something to do with his record as well.

I'm not saying he's a lock to do well but when it comes to dealing with NBA players, I believe he will do a better job than the coaches you mentioned, much more laid back style. The Xs and Os are a different matter and remains to be seen if he can make the jump to the NBA.
