Van Gundy: I 'regret' quitting Knicks
By Ian Begley

It's been nearly 12 years, but Jeff Van Gundy still regrets the day he decided to walk away from the New York Knicks.

The topic came up while Van Gundy was defending Doc Rivers' breakup with the Boston Celtics in an interview with ESPN New York 98.7 FM. ESPN's Bill Simmons has been critical of the way Rivers handled his exit from the Celtics, but Van Gundy stood up for his former contemporary.
"I quit the Knicks so I know what quitting is," Van Gundy said in an interview with "The Michael Kay Show." "I did. I quit. And it's something I regret to this day. I live with it every day and I regret it. And I let my emotions come into it. And I was just emotionally spent. I made a bad decision and I quit.

Listen to the interview with Jeff Van Gundy:

"Doc Rivers didn't quit. He was allowed to pursue a better opportunity for himself. And to me, that's a significant, significant difference that everybody's glossing over."

Rivers left the Celtics earlier this week to coach the Clippers. In return, Los Angeles sent Boston a 2015 first-round pick. Some view the transaction as Rivers bailing on the Celtics as they approach a rebuild. But Van Gundy says there's a big difference between what Rivers did and what he did when leaving the Knicks in December 2001.

"Mine's worse. I live with that regret every day. Not because I view myself, quote-unquote as a quitter. I don't look at it that way. But I did leave that situation, I did quit that situation and I live with that regret," Van Gundy, now an ESPN analyst, said.

Former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy might prefer to have a clipboard in his hand.
When asked about his reasons for leaving the Knicks, Van Gundy mentioned several factors: The team had lost to the Toronto Raptors in the postseason the previous year; Marcus Camby had to deal with the kidnapping of his mother and two sisters during the series; Patrick Ewing was traded before the 2000-01 season; Larry Johnson retired before the 2001-02 season.

"I had a great job with the Knicks. Like I said, I let momentary frustration, not even momentary, things that had been building up, this frustration, when I should have taken more time to come to that conclusion or a conclusion," Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy credited Knicks owner James Dolan for providing him with every resource necessary to succeed.

"The frustrations were real but it was certainly on overreaction and, like I said, I'm the only one to blame for that because I had a great, great job and I left it voluntarily and I still regret it," he said.

Van Gundy said he still feels badly that he wasn't able to deliver a title during his tenure as Knicks coach.

"I will always regret that I wasn't able to help those guys (his players) get what they honestly deserved," he said.

He remembers the day he walked out on the team vividly.

"I did get a good hot dog out of it because I walked from the practice facility to the hot dog stand … but that was about all I got from that stupid decision," he said.

NETS HAVE BEST STARTING FIVE IN THE LEAGUE: Van Gundy gave Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov major credit for shelling out the money to bring Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to Brooklyn.

He says Prokhorov and the Nets have put together the best starting five in the NBA. Pierce, Garnett, Brook Lopez, Deron Williams and Joe Johnson will start for Brooklyn in 2013-14.

"I do think they're a championship-caliber team," Van Gundy said. "If they play well and remain healthy, which is always a challenge for an older team, I think they have the best starting unit talent in basketball."

I always gave him a pass after the years of playoff runs and pres conferences with blackened eyes from too much work and lack of sleep and maybe too much diet coke.

Jeff being upfront about it now is pretty cool. He was a very young coach and was "Fried" with a young family at the time.

I was always surprised when knick fans jumped on him for "Quitting" so hard after the success he had. Im sure we all thought we were entitled to a title. The dude's passion and grit was impressive.

No pass. He quit on us and we have been in a tailspin until very recently.

I love JVG but he walked out on us. He had his reasons, but he still quit. I thought he knew we were going down and he didn't want to be part of a sinking ship.

I still give him a pass. JVG looked thoroughly burnt out by the time he left. I can't fault someone who has reached their limits. Van Gundy also left during a win streak if I'm not mistaken.

In a league where coachs last about 3 years and get fired all the time, for a guy to quit on a team after 6 years as an assistant and into his 7th as a head coach its really not hard to understand. Despite a great winning record he had to fight for his job constantly and deal with 3 management changes (checketts-Grunfeld-Layden) all while working in a paranoia infused environment by Dolan. Dolan wanted to can his ass for a few years!

its never good to quit on a team but we not talking him bolting on children or the disabled, we talking about pro-basketball!

Jeff quit, end of story...He had to deal with turmoil??..He was the cause of it...He didn't want to play Camby and Sprewell...The very guys we needed to push us deep into the playoffs...We were doing it despite Jeff...Grunfeld was a good GM and was insisting he play those pieces...Jeff got him fired..It's was Jeff or Grenfeld then he quit on us anyway after he saw the team was hitting a speed bump 12 games into the season...He still doesn't get a pass but good to see he manned up...

The last really good coach we had who gave it everything he had and then some. He had good players who were mostly way past their prime but he god solid results. I would take him back in half a heartbeat over the incumbent idiot.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

I like JVG but you hit the nail on the head. He was pissed off about the Oakley/Camby trade and eventually got Grunfeld fired for it. That led to Layden/Isiah and all the turmoil.

Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

The real problem was Jeff was trying to kowtow to Ewing because Ewing got him the job...Ewing felt threatened by the new guard and didn't want to take a back seat to the younger players...Jeff butt heads with Ernie Grunfeld as a result..Grunfeld wanted Spree and Camby to get more playing time and a larger role on the team...Grunfeld got fired because it became one or the other..Then Jeff quit after he saw the team wasnt a deep playoff caliber team...The Knicks job turned out to be the biggest job JVG ever had, and now he realizes that..So now he regrets the move...
