What abour Andrew Bynum? Who takes a chance on him? Dallas? Cleveland?….and for how much? 4 yrs at 8 million?

Larry Coon

I think Andrew is a candidate for a contract with an Exhibit 3, which is a prior injury exclusion. It’s the same thing Brandon Roy got with Minnesota. It says that if you can’t play skilled basketball due to your pre-existing injury and we waive you, we don’t have to pay you. I think a team would be willing to give him a big offer as long as they’re protected that way.

So if you are Andrew’s agent, how much salary are you willing to give up in order to increase the guarantee? Somewhere in the middle between the actual salary and the guaranteed salary is a middle figure that he & a team will be able to live with.

I have never heard of an exhibit 3 contract. He also said that if a team waived a player and used the stretch provision to spred out the contract that same team could sign the player if he cleared waivers. I don't know if that would be smart to do with Amare. The Knicks will have a lot of cap space in two years when he comes off the books but it would give them some wiggle room this year and next. I think Amare clears waivers because I can't see another team taking on that contract.

It probably doesn't involve contracts created before the new CBA.

I am not sure. I know Coon proposed the Knicks matching Lin's offer and using the 'stretch provision' if he didn't pan out.

You're right.

the league office. Sam Amick of SI.com obtained a copy and posted it online.

“For new contracts, salary of waived players to be “stretched” for cash purposes such that the player’s remaining protected compensation would be paid over twice the number of remaining contract years plus 1 year.

“In lieu of the usual cap treatment, the waiving tam may elect to have the waived player’s salary follow the stretched cash allocation, except that stretching a waived player’s salary for cap purposes is not permitted where the portion of total team salary attributable to all waived players in any future season would exceed an agreed upon percentage of the salary cap in effect during the season in which a player is waived.”

Please, no Bynum. Like throwing good money after bad. After his season in Philly, I can see no bright future for this guy.

That was before Kidd retired.

I still go back and forth with Bynum. I'd gamble on him under these conditions but it would have to be low risk e.g. using Novak, Camby's and our non-guaranteed contracts.
