The New York Knicks are certainly planning a productive offseason. With free agency quietly approaching in a few weeks, the Knicks could possibly be looking to dump one or more of their marquee players. The team has very little flexibility when it comes to their roster and financial freedom. Knicks vice president Glen Grunwald has expressed his desire to keep the core players together, but if they want to improve, that might not be possible. As a result, the team is tossing around the idea of sending Tyson Chandler to the Minnesota Timberwolves, sources report.

Iman Shumpert is not going anywhere. The Knicks view him as a young asset. Amar'e Stoudemire has an inflated contract of $44 million and a poor history of injuries so he is not very valuable in a trade. This leaves Chandler as bait for a favorable package in return.

The idea might be hard to swallow for Knicks' fans. Chandler has been one of the most productive players on the team in the past two seasons. However, Chandler will be 31 with a history of injuries in his knees and back. His productivity and ability to still play at an elite level make him very attractive to other teams.

The Knicks have talked with the Timberwolves about acquiring Derrick Williams in place of Chandler. He is gamble and was disappointing in his first few years in the league, but he has a skill set that can make him productive in the paint and can develop down the road. New York would also get Luke Ridnour who has been a target of the team for years. He would give the Knicks depth at point guard. Considering the team is replacing Jason Kidd, he would be much needed. New York also wants the No. 26 draft pick in the trade. It would give the team two picks in the first round.

Chandler going to the Timberwolves would give the team a proven player since building a franchise are young inexperience has yet to pay off for them. Placing Chandler alongside rising stars like Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio could seriously help the team's cause.

A trade involving Chandler would have the Knicks waving goodbye to the cornerstone piece of the their defense and getting younger talent in return. Minnesota would be set at the center position and New York would build with depth and youth.

Wow. If this is true then this would be big for the Knicks. Salaries don't match though. The would need to add Barrea into the package to make it work. OR..Make it AK47 and Derrick Williams and 26th pick. That would work also.

If the Wolves include Stiesma it works on the trade checker.

This was on KnickSwag the day before this story was written. Not sure if the Swag guys were proposing a trade or responding to a rumor.

yes - a tweener SF/PF and a back up PG for a the only DPOY in Knicks history would be awful. I'd rather hope Tyson recovers from injury than make that deal

I don't know. I kinda like it. Maybe it's because I just want change.

Williams is a bust because he doesn;t have a true position in the NBA... Ridnour is a back up. A very good back up. But a back up nonetheless.

I want more than a bust and a backuup for Tyson. I'm open to fielding offers for him. I think a healthy Tyson is better than what Williams and Ridnour at their best can give

I do understand want to shake things up - but I can't see a big shakeup benefitting the Knicks. I think the best bet is to replace some of the geriatric vets with some young blood. For better or worse I think the prudent thing is to ride out the big names' contracts and reevaluate when they come off the books

Even though Our Defensive center was not very defensive,
while Tyson Chandler’s backslide from defensive anchor to passable rim protector came seemingly out of the blue. Look no further than the Knicks’ DRTG with Chandler on/off the court, courtesy of NBA.com/Stats: the Knicks were actually better on defense with Chandler on the pine this season, which, of course, wasn’t the case the season prior.
, I wouldn't do this trade unless Pek was involved.

Also, I just hope it is not part of a 3way trade with Dallas for the 13th pick.

Knick: 13th pick, Marion, Williams, Ridinour, and 26th pick/future 1st

Minny: Chandler

Dal: White

That gives Dallas the cap space they need without taking anything back. I don't like it for NY at all.

That's not bad if we're blowing it up and starting over but I doubt that happens. At a minimum, if we're trading Tyson we need a center in return or a replacement already in place.

Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

Unless they go Center by committee it sucks. Although , it does give them a major jump on 2014 FA because Marion and Ridnour contracts end and Williams contract has a team option. If Chandler leaves I bet Camby gets healed quickly to take on the starting role. Camby injuries are funny like that.

I'd do that trade if we were giving up Melo. Chandler? No way.
Rose is not the answer.

Agreed. It's an interesting package but not the type of players/picks I'd be looking for in exchange for Tyson -- I think we could do better than this. There's gotta be a better deal out there.
