IF J-Kidd indeed calls it quits....
Does his 3 mil get removed from our Cap? As in do we have an additional 3 mil to spend?

Another question: If one team is under the cap and another is over, do salaries in trades have to match?

Supposingly after the tax threshold, the teams that are over MUST MATCH dollar for dollar ,regardless (which is VERY HARD TO DO)

Normally, it depends on who is taking the higher salary, there is a 150% rule, in which you can take back as high as 150% of the salary you are trading out
However, with this new CBA tax in effect, we are quite limited in what we can do, so don't think the 150% rule no longer applies to us (and teams over the tax unless they get under with trades/amnesty/buy outs)

Ironically, the same reason why we have trouble adding FA's with the new CBA rules with over the tax teams, is the same reason that improves our possibility in trades for players for much lower values than they are worth

For us with the 2nd year players and trade exemption we have, we can still realistically target a solid player *we still could target a player that a team is trying to dump to either go under tax or/and trying to sign a FA, which could still be players that can contribute effectively*

For instance,

Ridnour/Barea

Brandon Rush

Trevor Booker

Jameer Nelson??? with Camby's contract since his 3rd year is not guaranteed *but Nelson's isn't either, unsure if ANYTHING is guaranteed vs 1m of Camby's*, Nelson makes 8.6m and not sure if Orlando would be able to get draft picks for Nelson while they are going to be rebuilding and might even draft a PG to develop this year or/and target one next year *Jabari Parker* I would NOT part with our 1st rounder for Nelson either, it would be up to Orlando if they want to remove Nelson's 8m+ salary and allow a rookie PG to develop
If we acquired 2nd rounders, I would probably offer 1 pick though for a proven player like Nelson

Jeremy Lin/Omar Asik although I don't think these are that legit without giving up asset's even though Houston could be looking to clear up space, another team could offer much more than what we could in terms of salary dump and assets

For Bayless I wonder what his value is at right now with a pretty bad performance vs the Spur's but overall he had a good year especially when he had to step in for Bayless/Tony Allen when they were hurt. Considering Kidd and Bayless make the same amount of money, we could use his ability to penetrate/spread the floor/facilitate and use his speed/quickness
We could offer a 3year 3m MLE and offer him the chance to START, maybe even a player option in year 3

Actually, we do still pay him.

There are two ways that his salary wouldn't count. If he retired due to injury we could get an injured player exception but I highly, highly doubt we could get one for a player retiring in his 40s. The only other thing that could happen is that Kidd would retire and the team would file a petition with the NBA saying we don't want him to retire. If Kidd still wishes to go through with it he would forfeit the rest of his salary and it would come off our cap.

Dude you still on this? The Knicks are NOT going to willingly let him retire. Stop the madness.

It's understood that retiring means forfeiting your remaining contract if your not injured.

It depends. As long as the team that's under the cap doesn't end up more than $100k over the cap after the trade salaries don't need to match but the team that's over the cap can't go over a certain maximum salary. For a luxury tax-paying team, like us, we could take back any amount of salary up to 125% plus $100k of the salary we're sending out. So, for example, Houston is almost $5M below the current salary cap, We could theoretically trade Steve Novak, making about $4M this year, to them and receive back anything from a future 2nd round pick to players whose salaries equal $5.1M.

If a team is over the cap but not paying luxury tax the rules regarding how much salary they can take back changes depending on how much salary they're sending out.

  • If a team is trading player salary up to $9.8M they can take back 150% plus $100k.
  • If a team is trading player salaries between $9.8M and $19.6M they can receive salaries $5M more than they're sending out.
  • If a team is trading salary over $19.6M they have the same restraints we do, 125% of outgoing salary plus $100k.

Two other important notes. Minimum salaries don't count in trades; we could trade $10M worth of minimum salaries for a draft pick and that's fine but we wouldn't be able to receive any players back unless they also make the minimum. For trade purposes, certain player's salaries aren't their current salary but the average salary for the rest of their contract. Players still on their rookie contract that have already signed an extension (Blake Griffin, James Harden) and players that have signed poison pill contracts (Lin, Asik) are subject to this rule.
