The good thing about this mess is that
Melo $23.5mm
Amare $23.5mm
Chandler $15mm
Camby $4mm
Kidd $3mm

all expire in two years

only guys signed beyond that are
Novak $3.7mm
Shump $3.8mm (QO)
Felton $4.5 (PO)

In only two years we will be looking at massive cap space. I think the overall plan to get two star players in here is a good one. The problem is Amare is broken and Melo isnt a build around guy.

So whats the plan?

I still hold out hope that Melo can be a "Paul Pierce" type player. The sooner we can get a true post-up guy to replace Tyson/Amare, the better.

Melo has player option on the last year. He might exercise that and we lose him for nothing or we stuck with another huge contact.

Gamble on a young prospect....Either through the draft, trades or both. Groom the potential young star(s), and hope he turned into something special within the next two years.

This would give us a nice young group, full of potential, and cap space to add a legit star or two!

his PO is the year Amare and the others are expiring. So I would keep him and let him walk at the end of the year, OR he can come back for a discount. If he wants to play for $10mm a year so we can offer another guy a big $$ deal thats fine.

I would love Melo in a Paul Pierce type roll for $10mm a year. Is that realistic?

No clue but this is the Knicks we're talking about. IMHO, they'll max Melo out and will probably sign JR to a 4 year deal this season at around $5 mil per season. Add in whoever we draft this year, if he's still in the league two seasons from now. Who knows maybe Melo will realize that he needs to go the Miami collusion route and take a pay cut to build a super team. The major problem I see is that even with Melo taking a Lebron like pay cut, there are only a few free agents that jump out at me but nothing that makes me go bonkers.

Here's a few "names" that will be unrestricted free agents come the 2015/2016 season.

PG's
Rondo
Lin
Dragic

SG's
Wesley Mathews
Lou Williams
Eric Gordaon (Player Option)

SF's
BLAHHHHH

PF's
Boozer
Aldridge
KEVIN LOVE (player option)

C's
Our very own Tyson Chandler
Marc Gasol
DeAndre Jordan
Hibbert (Player Option)
Lopez (Player Option)

I don't know.... Melo, Rondo, Love??

sounds good and I agree. Whats the Knicks history with prospects?
Lin? Gone for nada
Gallo, etc? Gone for Melo
Shump? Tried to make him gone for Nash

Sounds good... seeing is believing.

Blockbuster trade to bring back another high-paid but flawed or fading star or stars who raise our hopes and keep us over the cap for another few years.

I think this is spot on - a "franchise" type of guy that requires another "franchise" type of guy. KG, Allen, and Pierce could barely make the playoffs on their own. Put them together and they have been one of the best teams of the past decade

We got plan C - Tyson Chandler is no Chris Paul

When hasn't this been the case though. That's what great teams have franchise guys not guy. STAT's health and salary restricts that. Take that salary off the roster and you can build a better team. If he was healthy and continued as a post player the Knicks would be a better team.

Not saying you are saying it to slight Melo because to me it is not a slight for any player to need other great players.

We will never know what plan B was since he was never allowed to finish his plans.

His Plan A was somewhat Pipe Dreamish....Lebron wasn't coming....therefore his Plan A was like fictitious. His Plan B turned out brutal although it was actually not bad, what he didn't do was properly plan for Plan B. His plan was to have multiple good players on the team at a good price but he kept giving aways assets that he never needed to give away and didn't maximize on the assets he had at his disposal. He never should have acquired Amar'e either at least not without insurance.

THE Plan should be to stop looking for stars and if one comes available then be in position to make a run, otherwise try to develop a great team and a star will rise out of that..

first I would work on building a team that is athletic and can play both sides of the ball.. I would see if shumpert is really a starting SG and try to pair him with a PG... I thought he and lin would be our back court of the future, but oh well.

I would not mind a bledsoe/ shumpert back court and then I would go with defensive midned SF.... of course all of this would require moving carmelo and trying to use whatever we get out of the deal to make some of these moves, but that would be a start...

For me a good start would be Bledsoe/ shumpert/ and Batum at SF... PF I would rotate amare and get a Carl landry type... since amare and that contract are going nowhere... If we can move tyson chandler fine, if not, keep him and get another big to rotate with him.. Bj mullens comes to mind... athletic, big body and still improving...

Walsh's plan gets a 'd' at best and that is only because he got Melo. Giving away picks, letting good young players leave for cap space to chase LBJ, trading away lower level stars with big contracts etc. Not sure what almost worked. The Knicks have a 21 million dollar boat anchor on their cap annually and they traded away the 2012 first round pick to get the cap space to sign him. Walsh also let everyone know what his endgame was and was taken advantage of in every move he made. The guy he hired as his coach was a disaster. If his plan was to bury the Knicks in mediocrity and cap hell he got them there.

It's been over a year and a half that MDA left he team yet the agenda driven trolls keep posting about him. I am sorry your hard on for MDA lasted this long you should have a seen a doctor at around the 4 hr mark.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Melo will almost unquestionably opt out and be resigned to another max deal. Shump will command more $. The best case is we leave enough room to add one more max player.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
