At the start of the season, expectations for the Knicks were comparatively low. Now, after this series with Indianapolis, who gave Miami trouble last year in the playoffs and were battling with us for the 2nd seed, the Knicks are being portrayed as complete failures. I do not understand this... I thought the Knicks definitely showed up in game 6. Melo shot a high percentage and we battled back from deficits until the end of regulation. I honestly thought the game could of went either way, it just fell in Indianapolis's favor probably due to some breaks with officiating. I thought it was an incredibly exciting season and always thought the Pacers would be a challenge. Maybe i'm being optimistic, but i'm gonna stand by this team and these players. When was our last playoff series win again?

Not sure what anyone else's expectations were, but it was pretty clear to me that this elderly group had a small window to accomplish what they all claimed was the goal--a championship. They looked good at times, they looked mediocre at times, but it seemed pretty reasonable that if they were serious about contending it would be this year, or the next 2. Given those expectations expressed by the team and the restrictions of being over the cap, it seems to me a ECF appearance would have been a very solid goal for a vet team that does not have a whole lot of upside. Let's not pretend this is a team full of 24-year olds and cap room that made an unexpected run in the playoffs they can build on over many years.

Last Summer was our last real chance to improve; we had a few tradable assets and enough cap space to perform sign-and-trades and, for the most part, it was a swing and a miss on Grunwald's part. Now, we have an aging roster with little room for improvement and I just don't see a road to get better.

Does Q-rich and Earl Barron have unguaranteed contracts? can we trade them like dan gadzaric last year?

I think Q-Rich and James White do, I don't know about anyone else.

I started the poll on grading the Knicks just now because my sense is that you're reading more doom and gloom into the responses than there is. I thought the average grade would be around a B- or C+, which seems reasonable to me.

If you want to cheer up a bit, go back and look at the threads from the first pre season games of 2012- it's hilarious how much people were over reacting based on preseason games.

We did a lot better than I thought, and I really enjoyed the regular season for the first time in over ten years. I guess I'm down about the playoffs, because they were a huge disappointment. That'll stick for a while. Also I'm worried about how we can even improve the roster (looks like we'll lose some important pieces, and have very little to replace them with).

When there is a will, there is a way. As much as everyone crashed and burned around Melo in the playoffs, his supporting cast played a pivotal role in getting us that no.2 seed. That being said, I think they'll have value on the market, irrespective of their playoff performances. For all the talk about us being in a horrible financial predicament, none of our players have contracts longer than 2 years (aside from Novak) which makes them movable. Add to that fact that we have a draft pick, our exceptions (mini midlevel and lower level exception), $3 million additional dollars to buy more draft picks/sweeten trades, an ever improving foreign scouting system and the ability to trade Tyson Chandler without taking money back, and I think we're in solid shape to make necessary moves. We just need a little imagination and creative, which Grunwald has had in spades.

I'm not happy the way we played in some of those playoff games. I really wanted to see what we could've done against Mia, but overall it was a fun season and we didnt get killed in the first round. Maybe I'm just too young and naive, and there's some bitter old farts here(lol jk) but I'm generally happy with what we did.

Ditto. If you're not named the 2010-present Miami Heat, the 2008-2009 Celtics or Lakers then building a contender takes more than a season or two. We've been taking the incremental steps necessary to field a legitimate contender and have improved each and every year since Melo has been here. Its only logical to believe that we'll take another step forward this upcoming season and make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. We could've done that this year but faced a team that was considered one of our two matchup nightmares (including the Bulls as well) and still nearly pushed them to a game 7, which I had to believe we'd be a favorite to win. A reasonably called game and we'd already be in the Eastern Conference Finals this year, so I'm satisfied with our season and improvement.

No doom and gloom but If you have three max FA including carmelo and a bench full of expensive role players and vets up and won--what is your honest expectation? 50 wins and 2nd round at a minimum right??????? i think we hit minimum expectations so the season should be ranked a B

Great! We'll be ready to win championships when Melo is in his seventeenth season then

Doing the minimum is a B? Most teachers give a D for the minimum, C for average, and Bs and As for performance above expectations.

Or maybe next season like what I suggested.

B+ cuz I thought Woodson coached his ass off most of the year and my expectaions were low, so they excceded them!

I'd give it a B as well. Although we have a lot of veterans, there wasn't that much playoff experience for the team as a collective group. This team is relatively newly assembled. When the defense tightens up in the playoffs it's a whole different scenario which the regular season fails to simulate.
