Taxpaying teams have a smaller midlevel exception, can acquire less salary in trade, and cannot use the biannual exception. Starting in 2013-14, teams more than $4 million above the tax level cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade transaction.

And that is why I have been looking to offload Tyson Chandler for 2nd round picks, trade exemption, and regain bi annual exemption with 5m MLE to use
Had Tyson Chandler had a more productive impact in the playoffs, we still might have a decent shot in getting a move like this for his 14m contract for 2 more seasons
However, with the this new CBA and his horrid performance, I think we would be VERY lucky if we can get such a deal in which some here still do not grasp the value of such a move

Its part of the reason Morey structured Asik and Lin's contract to have balloon payments in that year. The penalty for teams over the cap goes dramatically in that year also.

Can you post some examples of teams dramatically improving by using trade exceptions?

Sun's when they used it to acquired Nash when Dallas elected to not resign him, by trading Marbury to NY with 2 1st round picks

One caveat. We probably can't perform sign-and-trades but we won't know for certain until the NBA releases the cap number for next season.

The Exception and being able to S&T would give the Knicks enough space to sign a player is the point RonROn and others are making.

I think the Knicks can do better than some 2nd round picks that's just silly to me. You move Tyson because he really stops rebounding in the playoffs for some reason. I had some numbers posted a while ago about Tyson somewhere.

Also when Ben Wallace was moved from Orlando to Detroit

Orlando used it from Tmac and Grant Hill but Hill was a bust

Detroit also used trade exemption to acquire Rasheed Wallace

So this is 3 scenarios

another one pending is Laker's used it for acquire Nash

I am not 100% on this, but I think if either Kidd or Camby retire, the Knicks will be UNDER the apron and would be able to have $5.5M midlevel and sign and trades?

I don't think so. I think it still on the salary cap but it just creates roster space. The key is to trade Camby and pay the team to keep him with the 3 million. Kidd can retire to create a roster place to sign someone that is willing to take a 2 yr contract with the second year non-guaranteed.
