“From the MRI [exam] he shows he has some fluid build-up, which is causing the stiffness,” Woodson said. “Rest will probably be the best thing for him. He’s got to make that commitment. If he wants to sit down and rest a game or two we’ll do that. It’s still a long season.”

Popovitz said stiffness in the back of the knee can stem from flaking of articular cartilage or a small meniscus tear that doesn’t always show up on a routine MRI exam. According to Popovitz, who is not treating Anthony, the Knicks star can play through the cartilage damage — if that’s what it is — but probably would need offseason arthroscopic knee surgery.

Looks like it is not so bad but Melo will play less for sure. Is it good thing or bad thing? Will the team step up?
Will Melo himself be forced to became more willing to play team ball? Interesting...

He has 10 years of very heavy playing minutes. The Knicks are 4-4 this year and 11-8 overall without him. They should be able to continue playing around .500.

Never a good thing. Knicks need to get back to blowout bad teams so the starters can rest. Enough with barely beating the pistons and wizards of the world

Actually, scratch that - I just looked at the upcoming schedule.

Yeah, this isn't earlier in the year when JR hit game winners against the Suns and Bobcats. I ALWAYS say that the player needs to do what he possibly can to recover and I side by that player for that. With that said, we need Melo on the court if we want that 2nd or 3rd playoff spot.

I think we'll be fine as long as he doesn't miss a month. Less minutes will be better for him and better for the team in the long run. I mentioned already that once he got himself right last March and April he went on a tear. Hopefully they can manage his minutes and he can get better for the stretch run and playoffs.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind him sitting until next week. If we have to sacrifice OKC, so be it, but we can beat Utah Saturday without him.

Plus, the longer Melo's out, the more deranged starting lineups there will be to post about! Almost 6 pages of posting about the mental deficiencies of our coach in the last game thread! Gotta be top ten!

martin, is there any way to convert the MDA icon to a Woody icon? There's enough hate on the site now to truly warrant one now.

Kobe, MJ, Ewing, houston, those type players would not sit out of a statement game against top west team..

Take less shots and facilitate..

It would be wonderful if he would play through it at all costs and then be gimpy for the playoffs. We could then ride him for lack of competitive fire and not wanting it enough.

Like I said yesterday this has the makings of....

Baker's Cyst

Sous Chef's Lump

Cutlery Stadium Hernia

Hells Kitchen Laceration

Iron Skillet Fracture

Meanwhile Kobe is playing with burning tingling sensations in his elbow where it numbs out during a game then spikes pain throughout his arm and doing teams dirty....

Meanwhile Deron Williams is playing with bone fragments in his ankle and picking up his play taking shots and various other treatments.

Melo IMO just seems personally discouraged and is coming across very Marburyesque. Remember when Marbury started beefing with Isiah and he went and had exploratory ankle surgery without the team knowing?

Ain't Nobody Got Time For Deron Williams

3g4g - every man is different. Injuries can be painful, debilitating or career ending.

Who are you (or anyone else) to attach your arbitrary opinion of pain and suffering to Carmelo Anthony?

We already forgetting that this team hasn't gotten to the postseason healthy? The last thing we need is Melo suffering a serious injury. Getting into the playoffs healthy is more important than seeding.

If he's not healthy, he shouldn't play.

it's his right knee which is not his plant knee. big difference.

it doesn't really matter whether he rests, in my opinion. the central issue of this team will remain: a disturbing lack of chemistry, commitment to defense, and identity.

this is going to spell big trouble come playoff time. the team looks like it could be upset in the first round by boston, chicago, or atlanta.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

I thought the same thing, but this is a vet team with a lot of pride.

Veterans getting going when the stakes are high...if we are healthy for the most part come playoffs and don't make it to game 7 of the EFC...WOODSON should be fired

Big Fans Don't Cry

disturbing lack of chemistry

We have a well compensated star willing to sacrifice his ego for the whole and that makes him a malcontent? Players have not complained and have apparently supportevtheir coach's decisions. Last I checked, the bench (no matter who is riding it) appears to celebrate with passion and dap up sluggish play to encourage their running buddies when things may be out of sync. Lack of chemistry? Was there a locker room tussle we missed? Some unreported drama?

Did you miss Steve Novak flexing?

Any perceived lack of chemistry is only among the fans who are impatient. The players have supported one another all season. Even the new guys feel welcome.

commitment to defense

"Marcus Camby, please pick up the orange courtesy phone..."

All we need is a stunt man for Tyson Chandler. Sheed was unexpected fun while he lasted. He added a spirit that was loud and proud. He is missed on the court. Nice to see him on the bench giving other guys the business.

identity

Other than the home units needing better attention to font design, where exactly is the "identity" issue? Oh, wait, Mike Woodson does not conform to the image of head coach because he plays the unexpected "guys" too many minutes. Identity is simply a matter of perception. The Knicks are 37-21 which a a decent enough identity where it matters most.

Sheesh. Dry your tears, hike up your big boy pants and get some testosterone in your bloodstream.

There is no crying in basketball.

No, wake up! Two more teams you should be following rather than the Knicks! Lakeshow and the return of the Brookettes!

Will this ever end, or will we have recommendations for every other team in the league before the season's over?

Haven't we danced this dance before? We've always done our best to play our stars 40+ minutes a night and sometimes in preseason too(McDyess). How has that worked out for us? Do injuries get better when you play through the pain and ignore what your body is telling you or does it lead to worse play people being unavailable or limited come playoff time? This isn't NBA Live.
