Do NBA teams really need a playbook or can they get by on a system? Is the rest really just talent?

Just saw this quote from Houston assistant coach Sampson:

The all-offense attack is fine, though Houston's decision to trade away its entire power forward rotation in the span of an hour last week will test the coaching staff. Patrick Patterson and Marcus Morris had both become proficient 3-point shooters, especially from the corners, a key skill for any power forward in Houston's pace-and-space system. Robinson is not a 3-point shooter, and the coaches don't yet know what to do with him. Learning the playbook is not an issue, because Houston doesn't really have a playbook. "We don't have to stop practice and say, 'OK, now let's go over our plays,'" Sampson says. "We don't have any plays. During the flow of the game, very rarely do we run an actual play."

The first option for Houston is always the fast break. If they can't manage that, the Rockets essentially just shift into pick-and-roll mode. There are a few pick-and-roll variations, and Houston can use two or three of them on the same possession — the Harden/Asik pick-and-roll in the middle; the Lin/Asik or Parsons/Asik pick-and-roll on the wing as a second option; a Carlos Delfino/Asik pick-and-roll as a crisis third option; and various sets that have Harden fly off two screens on the right wing, take a dribble handoff at the right elbow, and then run what amounts to a high-speed pick-and-roll toward the middle as a shooter — usually Delfino — fades to the right corner.

in relation to the Knicks....

How much responsibility for offensive execution is really on Woodson?

It seems like teams know exactly what Houston is going to do but they still score a ton of points because it's tough to stop a Houston wing/Asik pick and roll?

Question: Why is this not also true for the Knicks?

I would think that Tyson can set a pretty good pick. Amare proved he could in Phoenix though on the Knicks at least when I've watched it seems hes slips the picks a decent amount of the time to quickly pop for a jumper or roll to the hoop whereas Asik is mainly looking to free up a wing since he can't really score or hit FTs.

Have all the injuries slowed Felton down and that's why we're not KILLING teams with the Felton/Chandler pick n roll like we were?
Are Harden/Lin/Parsons straight up just quicker than Felton? Harden def. makes people play closer than Felton because he's a better shooter. Ditto for Parsons. Lin's J has just started coming around but he is quicker than Felton.

Is it just talent? Seems like Woody is basically doing what McHale is doing and sticking to his bread and butter.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

Teams are now going under screens to make Ray shoot, and sorry but I have to disagree, Tyson sets some very lousy picks. He's picked up some pointers from Amare I think, but his hard screen and late roll only leaves one option open, the alley oop, and ray just isn't getting in the paint or is kicking out too fast. They need to take it in, draw some fouls, too unselfish. Amare on the other hand is able to set the screen perfectly for tge majority of the time(notice his spread stance and leg extended) so he can slip out without making full contact. The idea is to get the screener to the basket asap. Lin and Harden ate both excellent pick n roll players. Hard to match up with them. Felton and JR are good but Harden blows them out of the water with his all around game. Melo isn't much of a pick n roll player. Only once in a while does he show a glimpse of it.

Houston doesn't have Melo, a Iso heavy player..we were sort of successful with that style of play earlier in the season when brewer and kidd were hitting 3's at a decent clip and the ball movement was amazing.

now kidd isn't hitting the 3, doesn't penetrate, shump doesn't slash, and everyone looks for melo to bail them out of the possesion
